Reflections from the Recent 2025 ISPE Europe Annual Conference Session Powered and Led by ISPE’s Women in Pharma®

The recent “Workforce of the Future – Challenges and Opportunities” session at the 2025 ISPE Europe Annual Conference brought together professionals from across the pharmaceutical, biotech, and engineering sectors for a dynamic and thought-provoking conversation on the evolving nature of the workforce. The energy in the room remained high throughout the session—a testament to the commitment and shared purpose among everyone involved.

Shaping the Session

This session, spearheaded by the ISPE United Kingdom (UK) Affiliate Women in Pharma group, was intentionally designed as an open forum to encourage dialogue across all levels of experience—from early-career professionals to seasoned industry leaders. The goal was simple but vital: to provide a space where individuals could connect, exchange ideas, and reflect on the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of our industry.

One of the most powerful takeaways was the collective understanding that everyday actions—mentoring a colleague, encouraging open dialogue play a meaningful role in shaping a healthier, more sustainable workplace culture. These small steps add up to real change.

What The Women in Pharma Session Covered

Career Journeys

Attendees shared personal reflections on their professional paths, shaped by career pivots, global moves, and unexpected opportunities. These narratives gave insight into how people are building fulfilling and resilient careers in an industry that continues to evolve rapidly.

Mentorship and Allyship

A strong theme throughout the session was the importance of mentorship and allyship. Whether formal or informal, supportive professional relationships can empower individuals, boost confidence and promote a sense of belonging. There was also a clear recognition that allyship—including from colleagues of all genders—is essential in driving systemic change across the sector.

Work-Life Integration

Rather than aiming for a perfect “work-life balance,” attendees focused on integration—how professional and personal responsibilities can coexist meaningfully. Flexibility, empathetic leadership, and inclusive policies were cited as key enablers for long-term success and well-being. This approach reflects the changing expectations of the workforce, particularly as remote and hybrid models become more prevalent.

Key Takeaways

Shared Experiences Build Strength: Hearing others share similar challenges helped normalise those experiences and offered reassurance that no one is alone in their journey.

Community and Conversation Are Crucial: Sessions like these reinforce the value of professional communities that foster open dialogue and mutual support. They are not only opportunities to learn, but platforms for advocacy and collaboration.

A Broader Reflection: Coordinating this session was both rewarding and affirming. It reinforced the importance of creating intentional, inclusive spaces where professionals from different roles, backgrounds, and seniority levels can come together to learn from one another. While ISPE’s Women in Pharma program continues to shine a light on gender equity, the insights shared during this session extended far beyond, touching on universal themes relevant to all professionals navigating today’s workplace.

The ISPE UK Affiliate Women in Pharma group was also pleased to welcome several new members, including individuals relocating to the UK who are keen to build their networks. Planning is already underway for the next session—and the team looks forward to continuing the conversation.
