Women in Pharma® Member Spotlight on Miriam Kremer-van der Kamp

1. When did you join ISPE, and more specifically when did you get involved with ISPE’s Women in Pharma Group?

I joined ISPE in 2022, soon after starting my professional career in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. My involvement with ISPE’s Women in Pharma® group began in September of that year when I attended the first mission and vision workshop for the ISPE Women in Pharma DACH Affiliate group in Basel, driven by my interest in the group's goals. Around the same time, I took on roles within ISPE Emerging Leaders DACH Affiliate leadership team, and shortly after, I applied to join ISPE’s Women in Pharma International Steering Committee, beginning my first term in 2023.

2. Tell me a bit about your professional background and what drew you to the pharmaceutical industry?

My professional background is rooted in both engineering and biotechnology, with a strong emphasis on pharmaceutical technology. I was drawn to the pharmaceutical industry by my passion for science and its impact on improving public health. During my education and early career, I gained hands-on experience in areas like process engineering, commissioning, and project management with leading companies such as Exyte, MSD, and Bachem. This blend of technical expertise and the ability to contribute to life-saving innovations has solidified my commitment to this field.

3. What would you say has been the biggest benefit of joining ISPE so early on in your career?

Joining ISPE early in my career connected me with a strong network of professionals and gave me access to a wealth of knowledge, which has been invaluable in navigating the pharmaceutical industry. Participating in ISPE initiatives and the ISPE Emerging Leader programs has accelerated my professional development, provided mentorship opportunities, and allowed me to actively contribute to the evolving landscape of the industry. In fact, I even discovered my current job through an ISPE event.

4. As you look back on your career, you’ve had quite a few shifts in terms of your professional focus. What can you tell someone just starting out about taking chances, even if the role isn’t necessarily what you studied in school?

My career has seen several shifts, from biotechnology to project management and now business development, teaching me the value of adaptability and continuous learning. I would advise anyone starting out to embrace new opportunities, even if they don’t perfectly align with their original studies. Each role offers unique experiences and skills that contribute to a well-rounded career, and taking calculated risks can lead to exciting new paths.

These shifts have provided me with a broad base of knowledge and experiences, enabling me to work closely with and learn from like-minded professionals. This diverse background, along with the connections I've built, will be instrumental in my success as a business developer. Embracing change has not only expanded my expertise but also strengthened my ability to navigate the evolving landscape of the pharmaceutical industry.

5. You joined ISPE’s Women in Pharma International Steering Committee almost two years ago. Can you tell us a bit about your experience? Both on the local and international level?

My experience on the Women in Pharma International Steering Committee has been deeply rewarding. Locally, I've had the opportunity to connect with peers and mentor emerging professionals, fostering a supportive community. Internationally, I've collaborated with a diverse group of professionals, contributing to initiatives that promote gender equality and leadership development in the pharma sector. This dual involvement has allowed me to make a meaningful impact while also learning from global best practices. For example, the panel held last month for women in advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) was particularly inspiring. Engaging with peers from all over the world has taught me so much about the differences in cultures—not just focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), but also understanding how different issues are perceived in each country.

6. As an active member of ISPE’s DACH Affiliate, why would someone benefit from involving themselves both internationally and locally?

Involvement at both levels offers distinct advantages. Locally, you can directly engage with industry challenges and developments relevant to your region, while building strong professional relationships. Internationally, you gain exposure to broader industry trends, innovative practices, and a global network, which can provide new insights and opportunities for collaboration. This combination enriches your understanding of the industry, enhances your career prospects, and gives you a well-rounded knowledge of both international and local regulations and customs.

7. You’ve been instrumental in planning so many panel discussions and workshops for ISPE’s Women in Pharma on the international level. You’ve participated on panels and helped identify panelists. Can you tell us a bit about both roles and what you have discovered throughout your involvement?

Organizing and participating in panel discussions and workshops has allowed me to explore critical issues facing women in the pharmaceutical industry. In planning these events, I focus on creating inclusive platforms where diverse voices can share their experiences and insights. Being involved in these roles has reinforced the importance of representation and the need for ongoing dialogue to address industry challenges and opportunities for women. It has also been incredibly rewarding to meet so many amazing people during the process. This experience has helped me tackle my stage fright when doing introductions, and I’m so thankful for the growth and connections I’ve gained along the way. Witnessing the positive impact these discussions have on participants has been especially fulfilling.

8. If you could give a student or Emerging Leader a piece of advice what would it be?

My advice would be to stay curious and be open to learning new things. The pharmaceutical industry is constantly evolving, and keeping up with new technologies and methodologies is crucial. Don’t hesitate to seek out mentors, and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Building a strong network and being proactive in your career can lead to unexpected and rewarding opportunities. The worst you might hear is a “no,” but don’t let that get you down—just ask the next person. In my experience, most people are very welcoming and eager to help you along the way.

10. Are there any exciting opportunities or events coming up for ISPE’s Women in Pharma DACH Affiliate group?

Yes, we have several exciting initiatives in the works for ISPE’s Women in Pharma DACH Affiliate group. These include our recurring series, “Industry Meets Women in Pharma,” with the next event scheduled for 15 November at Takeda in Zurich. We also have an upcoming workshop series, “Emerging Leader and Women in Pharma Insights,” a collaboration between our Women in Pharma group and Emerging Leaders. Additionally, we are considering launching our own mentoring cycle for the region. These events are designed to foster networking, share knowledge, and support the professional development of women in our industry. I encourage everyone to participate and take advantage of these opportunities.
