Roger Nosal Recognized with the Richard B. Purdy Distinguished Achievement Award for His Impact on ISPE and the Global Pharmaceutical Industry

As a member of ISPE's "Hall of Fame," Nosal’s extensive leadership and tireless dedication have left an indelible mark on the organization and on global regulatory practices.

For more than 20 years, Nosal has been a recognized thought leader at the intersection of regulators and industry, consistently leading efforts on highly complex and critical issues. His leadership in advancing global regulatory harmonization stands as a cornerstone of his contributions. In 2023, he spearheaded ISPE’s Enabling Pharmaceutical Innovation program aimed at global harmonization, further solidifying his influence in bridging gaps between regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders worldwide, exemplifying the long-term strategic contributions Roger has made to ISPE.

Nosal's exemplary work extends far beyond a single initiative. In 2022, he collaborated with Ganapathy Mohan from Merck to lead PhRMA’s engagement with the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) and international regulatory bodies, tackling pressing concerns surrounding the control of nitrosamines in pharmaceutical products. His thought leadership in these discussions demonstrated his unmatched ability to drive critical change within the industry. Furthermore, Nosal has served as a moderator for ISPE’s Global Regulatory Town Hall events and once again led discussions at the 2024 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo. His ongoing participation in these high-visibility platforms underscores his integral role in connecting industry professionals with regulators to address emerging challenges.

One of Nosal’s most notable achievements is his co-founding and past leadership of ISPE’s Regulatory Steering Council (RSC) from 2017 to 2020. As Chair of the RSC, he led efforts to strengthen regulatory collaboration and foster communication between industry experts and global regulators. His strategic guidance has been invaluable in advancing ISPE’s mission of promoting regulatory harmonization, and his ability to bridge the gap between industry and regulators is unparalleled.

With over 200 formal presentations and panel discussions, he has been an invited expert for regulatory bodies including the US FDA, European Medicines Agency in the EU, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agenda (PMDA) in Japan, and regulatory agencies in China, Singapore, and Brazil, among others. His numerous contributions to publications, including more than 40 authored works, have played a pivotal role in advancing technological innovation and regulatory practices.

Nosal’s leadership extends to the development and implementation of Quality by Design (QbD) concepts, where he has been instrumental in shaping modern pharmaceutical manufacturing practices. His efforts in conjunction with the ICH Q8, Q9, and Q10 guidelines have led to more efficient drug development processes and enhanced product quality. His work on critical initiatives, such as real-time release testing and continuous process manufacturing, continues to influence regulatory strategies worldwide. These innovations have been adopted in over 100 countries, showcasing the global impact of Nosal's contributions.

Throughout his career, Nosal has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to mentorship, guiding both industry colleagues and regulatory officials. His ability to create a collaborative space for discussions on contentious topics is a testament to his leadership. He is frequently sought after as a mentor, providing guidance to both established professionals and ISPE Emerging Leaders.
