  • Ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol)

    (C2H6O) Commonly used to disinfest plant tissues, glassware utensils and working surfaces in tissue culture manipulations. The concentration used is 70% (v/v) for disinfecting and 95% (v/v) when flaming tools. Ethanol is also used to dissolve water-insoluble additions (addendums) to culture media.

    Ethnography is the study of people and their culture. Ethnographic research, also called fieldwork, involves observation of and interaction with the persons or group being studied in the group's own environment, often for long periods of time.
  • Ethylene Oxide (ETO)

    A toxic compound used in gaseous form as a sterilizing agent, usually as a 10% mixture with carbon dioxide or 12% mixture with freon (referred as 12-88). Sterilization using ETO leaves residual chemicals such as ethylene chlorohydrin and ethylene glycol.
  • Ethylene-Diamine Tetra-Acetic Acid (EDTA)

    A chelating compound. In tissue culture it is used to keep nutrients, such as iron, bound in a form that leaves them still available to the plant but which prevents them from precipitating out.
