  • Test Driver

    (IEEE) A software module used to invoke a module under test and, often, provide test inputs, control and monitor execution, and report test results. Synonymous: Test Harness.
  • Test Environment

    Controlled environment in which the testing will be conducted.

    Instrument or device used to calibrate other instruments, which is traceable back to accepted national standards. The test equipment should have precision, accuracy, and repeatability that is higher than that of the instrument being calibrated.

    (IEEE) The period of time in the software lifecycle in which the components of a software product are evaluated and integrated, and the software product is evaluated to determine whether or not requirements have been satisfied.

    (IEEE) A document describing the scope, approach, resources, and schedule of intended test activities. It identifies test items, the features to be tested, the testing tasks, who will do each task, and any risks requiring contingency planning.

    (IEEE) Detailed instructions for the set-up, execution and evaluation of results for a given test case.

    (NIST) A formal document developed from a test plan that presents detailed instructions for the setup, operation, and evaluation of the results for each defined test.

    (IEEE) A review conducted to evaluate preliminary test results for one or more configuration items; to verify that the test procedures for each configuration item are complete, comply with test plans and descriptions, and satisfy test requirements; and to verify that a project is prepared to proceed to formal testing of the configuration items.

    A review as in definition (1) for any hardware or software component.

    (IEEE) A document describing the conduct and results of the testing carried out for a system or system component.
  • Test Result Analyzer

    A software tool used to test output data reduction, formatting, and printing.
  • Test Run

    Operating a machine, process, or system for the identification, measurement, and evaluation of a material, product, system, or service that produces a test result.

    (IEEE) Documentation that specifies a sequence of actions for the execution of a test.
  • Test Scripts

    Describes (scripts out) the step-by-step process for executing a test case. Describes the expected system response to each individual step and contains a place to log and explain the pass/fail status of the executed test.

    A document that describes the scope, management, use of procedures, sequencing, test environment, and prerequisites for a specific phase of testing.
