    A severe immunological disorder caused by the retrovirus HIV, resulting in a defect in cell-mediated immune response that is manifested by increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections and to certain rare cancers, especially Kaposi's sarcoma. Primarily venereal routes transmit it or exposure to contaminated blood or blood products.

  • Air Change Rate

    The number of times the total air volume of a defined space is replaced in a given unit of time. This is computed by dividing the total volume of the subject space (in cubic feet) into the total volume of air exhausted from (or supplied to) the space per unit of time.
  • Air Cleaners

    Filtration systems that may be freestanding or installed in a ceiling or wall to remove contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, and dust from the air. Air cleaners may incorporate HEPA filters.
  • Air Contaminant

    Any particulate matter, gas, or combination thereof, other than water vapor or natural air.
  • Air Exchange Rate

    Rate of air exchange expressed as number of air changes per unit time and calculated by dividing the volume of air delivered in the unit of time by the volume of the space.
  • Air Flow Diagram (AFD)

    Schematically shows rooms and zones served by an air handler, with air balance requirements, and often room pressures.
  • Air Monitoring

    The sampling for and measuring of contaminants in the air.
