Stephen L. Conway, PhD

Stephen currently leads a team in the Merck Center for Materials Science and Engineering supporting pharmaceutical product development. For the last three and a half years, Stephen has also lead a cross-functional team of scientists and engineers executing development, capital project and commercialization activities for Merck’s first implementation of Continuous Manufacturing, including participation in external pre-competitive collaborations and numerous Agency engagements. Stephen also heads the strategy team for deployment of Continuous Manufacturing in the small molecule pipeline. He has extensive experience of collaboration with both upstream formulation R&D partners and downstream commercial operations, specializing in physical characterization techniques. Prior to this, Stephen worked within small molecule drug substance manufacturing in Technical Operations and Process Engineering roles at several of Merck’s international manufacturing sites. Stephen obtained degrees at the University of Birmingham (UK), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, all in Chemical Engineering.
