Roland Smith is Senior Director of Digital GXP Systems at Moderna. Roland has more than 20 years of biopharmaceutical experience including progressive roles in research, operations, quality, software development and automation. In his current role he is responsible for the design, development and deployment of digitized processes for supply chain, manufacturing, quality, technical development and facilities. Prior to joining Moderna, Roland served as Head of Innovation, Analytics and Architecture leading digital strategy for Technical Operation at Shire Pharmaceuticals. He has led process redesign and digital transformation for a range of domains including quality management, product lot disposition, laboratory testing and manufacturing execution. Roland started his career in research working on a gene therapy for hemophilia and developed his passion for technology while exploring ways to optimize laboratory data collection. Roland earned his Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and his Masters of Business Administration from Cornell University.
