Dr. van der Loo is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Clinical Vector Core (CVC) at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), which has manufactured products in support of over 30 clinical trials in Phase 1, 2, and 3. He has been directing the development of GMP manufacturing of viral vectors for early phase clinical trials since 2002. His expertise includes vector development, process scale-up, and large-scale manufacturing of vector products for IND-enabling studies, including manufacturing of GMP-comparable materials for Pharm/Tox and GMP-grade clinical products, and GMP-compliant facility design. He has had numerous contracts with academia, industry and government, nationally and internationally, and has expertise in the manufacturing of adenoassociated virus (AAV), gamma-retroviral, lentiviral and foamy viral vectors. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Molecular Therapy – Methods & Clinical Development and has acted as consultant on viral vector manufacturing and facility design. Dr. van der Loo earned a PhD in hematology from the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, a Masters in immunology from the University of Utrecht, and a Bachelor of Science in cell biology from the University of Utrecht.
