Principal Consultant
Barry Starkman joined DPS Engineering in September of 2105 where he serves as Principal Consultant - Parenteral Manufacturing. Prior to a short attempt at retirement, his previous assignment was President and CEO of HemCon Medical Technologies in Portland, OR where he led a turnaround of the medical device company that produced bandages for severe bleeding made from chitosan. He also led the development of a freeze dried human plasma product for the US military. He served as VP-Operations at Promega in Madison, WI after an extended role at Genentech beginning in January 2005 as Director of Manufacturing Technical Operations in South San Francisco. About 6 months after joining Genentech, he was asked to represent manufacturing on a project to determine the feasibility of building a new filling and packaging facility and where to locate it. Throughout the fall of 2005, he led the conceptual design effort while evaluating various venues for the facility. By February 2006, Hillsboro had been selected. He then was appointed Director of Hillsboro Operations to lead the development of the facility and operations design, begin hiring staff and serve as the liaison to the local community. In June of 2007, he was named Plant Manager of the Hillsboro facility and at the same time relocated his family here from the bay area. Prior to joining Genentech he spent twenty-four years at Merck and Co., Inc. in various positions within the Engineering and Vaccine Manufacturing organizations. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Geology from Lafayette College in Easton, PA and a Masters Degree in Environmental Engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. Starkman serves on the Board of Directors of the Oregon Biosciences Association, Oregon International Airshow and the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce. He is a commercial instrument rated pilot and enjoys spending his spare time flying to find the perfect hamburger.
