Technical Tuesday: Evolution: Robotics at the Core of Future Facilities

Abstract:

In the past, traditional hard-piped single-product facilities required relatively few material movements. Manual material movements were sufficient at that time. Emerging single-use multi-product and flexible facility types require an exponentially greater quantity and complexity of material movements. In this context, automated robotic material movements are the only logical solution. Our challenge is to fundamentally reconsider how we design our Facilities. We need to cater for the emerging requirements of robotics. We need to design facilities that can be safely shared by robots and personnel in the present. We need to enable an increasingly robotic future. This is an evolved system of thought that reconfigures all aspects of facility design and places Robotics at the core of Future Facilities.

Brian Kelleher, Process Architect, PM Group

Brian has a wide range of experience and has worked on complex large-scale master-planning, mission-critical, office, laboratory, and pharmaceutical projects. He has specialised in pharmaceutical design; and has completed a certificate in Biopharmaceutical Processing at NIBRT (National Institute for Bioprocessing Research & Training). He is has a special interest in designing facilities that enable robotic automation and has spoken on this topic at the recent ISPE Industry 5.0 conference in May 2022. He is also an active member of the INVITE BioForum group researching the automation of secondary packaging lines

Aranxta Lera Anton, Architectural Lead, PM Group

Arantxa is an architect with 20 years’ experience in design and leading projects. Having worked as Head of Architecture in the PM Group’s UK operations, Arantxa has now moved to a global support role as an Architectural SME/Principal Architect, based in Ireland. She has led many pharmaceutical and regenerative medicine projects.
Arantxa holds a Masters in Architecture from the University of the Basque Country. Her personal interest in the adaptability of buildings led to a research based thesis on the subject for a post-professional MSc in Urban Design from University College Dublin.
