Background: The shutdown team at the Takeda Los Angeles manufacturing facility recently completed a successful large plantwide shutdown in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was made possible through careful and thorough planning, including a robust risk management strategy for the unique challenges caused by COVID-19.

The reliability team at Takeda enabled successful maintenance execution during our recent shutdown through an extensive risk-based approach to scheduling and prioritization. The team set to work more than a year in advance of the planned shutdown in identifying potential issues and areas for opportunity with regard to both compliance and resource loading. The effort was robust enough that the emergence of COVID-19 represented a manageable challenge for the site as opposed to an obstacle that put our ability to return to operations in jeopardy.
