AstraZeneca’s [formerly MedImmune’s] Frederick Manufacturing Center (FMC) Expansion, Building 633, received the prestigious ISPE overall 2011 Facility of the Year (FOYA) award on November 7, 2011. Sponsored by ISPE, Pharmaceutical Processing magazine, the premier award recognizes state-of-the-art projects utilizing new, innovative technologies to improve the quality of products, reduce the cost of producing high-quality medicines, and demonstrate advances in project delivery. This recognition was achieved through implementing ordinary tools in extraordinary ways, including an innovative approach to startup and operator training, a unique process for offline validation, and a robust project management process. The FMC Expansion Project was selected as the overall FOYA winner from a group of seven projects in four countries. The project was also honored as a FOYA category winner for project execution. Building 633 is a licensed, large-scale cell culture production facility, with 337,000 square feet of administrative, production, warehouse, laboratory and utility space. To accommodate future growth, we have internal expansion capabilities of 100,000 square feet of production space. It is flexible in design and can accommodate a wide product titer range. Additionally, we have a best in class Process Control System (PCS) to allow for the flexibility required to enable operators to control all processes in an efficient manner.
