The EHS aspects of design review are not often systematically incorporated into projects - implementing this effectively reduces regulatory risk, and ensures optimization of the design, improving productivity, and reducing cost and schedule impact from stage appropriate front end loading of the design development process.
The success of injury prevention through design depends on integrating EH&S issues as early as possible into the design, construction, and modification of facilities, processes, and equipment installations. In order to do this in a complete, consistent and coherent manner, AMGEN has developed a method and a web-based software tool EHS by Design (dEHSign).
Denise Bender is currently an Environmental Health and Safety Director at Amgen, specializing in the area of risk management and prevention through design. Previous experience focused on industrial hygiene, safety and environmental program development and support for primarily biopharmaceutical and research facilities. A graduate of NYU, Michael Walling has been IN-comunication’s co-director since its founding in 1990. Based in Aix en Provence France, where he resides, he co-founded IN-communication after moving to France from New York with his family. In New York, Michael worked in the theater where he acquired his communication skills. This savoir-faire is reflected in IN-communication’s activates— HSE communication and training strategies, training roadmaps, training supports, tools for integrating HSE into project workflows. Through IN-communication, Michael has represented IN-communication on missions in Europe, North America, Africa and the Pacific Islands. He has worked for the Energy, Chemical, Mining, Pharma, and Biotech sectors.
