Start Where You Are: Local Affiliate/Chapter Engagement
Every leadership journey begins close to home: For ISPE Emerging Leaders, that is your local Affiliate or Chapter. Affiliates and Chapters are the grassroots engine of ISPE’s community, offering emerging professionals their first real opportunities to volunteer, connect, and contribute. Whether you volunteer to organize a site tour, help coordinate a technical speaker series, or join a social event planning committee, volunteering opens the door to deeper industry involvement. These volunteer experiences are the proving ground where technical competence meets organizational influence.
Volunteering at the Affiliate and Chapter level builds and reinforces strategic thinking and the ability to move a group of diverse professionals toward a shared goal. It also builds relationships. The colleague you meet at a local event today may be a collaborator, mentor, or hiring manager tomorrow. For Emer-ging Leaders, Affiliates and Chapters are the first place to raise hands and, with the right initiative and drive, reap immediate returns.
Expanding Reach: Conferences, Hackathons, and Communities of Practice
Emerging Leaders who make an impression at the local Affiliate and Chapter level can become strong candidates for further international opportunities with ISPE. Emerging Leaders are highly encouraged to apply for professional grants through the ISPE Foundation to attend either the ISPE Europe Annual Meeting or the ISPE Annual Meeting and Expo. Emerging Leaders also can apply for the Jack Lysfjord Grant to attend the ISPE Aseptic Conference to learn about sterile products and aseptic processing.
ISPE’s Emerging Leader pathway is not accidental; it is intentionally layered, designed to help professionals grow from their first local volunteer impact to international strategic influence. The question is not whether the opportunity exists, but whether you are ready to pursue it.
ISPE’s international programming opens an entirely different scale of opportunity. ISPE’s flagship conferences—Facilities of the Future, Aseptic, Europe Annual Meeting, AI in Life Sciences Summit, Annual Meeting and Expo, and Pharma 4.0™—gather thousands of industry professionals from around the globe. Attending educational sessions, engaging in interactive fireside chats, networking in the Expo Hall, and submitting abstracts for the opportunity to speak accelerate professional development in ways that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.
The Hackathons at the ISPE Europe Annual Meeting and the ISPE Annual Meeting and Expo are pinnacle events. They also represent one of the most energizing formats for Emerging Leaders to quickly gain deep technical insight and strengthen soft skills. These innovation challenges expose cross-functional teams to real industry problems, demanding creativity, collaboration, and communication to find solutions under pressure. Hackathon participation is more than a résumé line—it is an intensive experience to reinforce and build skills that define effective future leaders.
Equally valuable are ISPE’s Communities of Practice, or CoPs. These topic-focused groups span areas such as GAMP®, sterile products, artificial intelligence, and advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs). CoPs let members go deep on subjects that matter most to their careers. CoPs create a dedicated community around shared expertise and can give Emerging Leaders a consistent forum to ask hard questions, share insights, and build credibility within a specialized domain.
The Highest Level: Steering Committees on the International Stage
For people ready to lead internationally, ISPE’s regional steering committees represent the apex of volunteer engagement. These bodies are the North America/South America Affiliate Council, the Europe Affiliate Council, and the Asia Pacific Affiliate Council. Each of these regions has a Chair and Co-Chair who are elected by ISPE’s Emerging Leader community. The Chairs of each region then become contributing members of the ISPE International Emerging Leader Steering Committee. The Emerging Leader Steering Committee also has a Chair and Co-Chair, and the Chair serves as an ex officio member of the ISPE International Board of Directors. Together, the Emerging Leader Steering Committee guides the strategic direction of ISPE Emerging Leader programming and resource development for the entire Emerging Leader community.

Start with your local Affiliate or Chapter and ask how you can get involved. Apply for professional grants from the ISPE Foundation and gain exposure to ISPE programming at the international level. Sign up for the Hackathon and challenge yourself to develop solutions to a problem statement in 24 hours. Look to network, join a CoP, and see whether there is an opportunity for Emerging Leaders to support a CoP initiative such as updating a Good Practice Guide. And, when the time comes, put your name forward for a leadership role at the international steering committee level. The industry needs leaders who are ready, and ISPE is ready to develop them.
