During his welcome address on 12 May in London at the 2025 ISPE Europe Annual Conference, Mike Martin, President and CEO of ISPE and the ISPE Foundation, set the stage for what would become the most well-attended Europe Annual Conference to date, drawing 1,200 participants. He opened the conference by sharing how his background as an engineer has shaped his involvement with ISPE. While engineering is the technology-based discipline at the core of the organization, ISPE encompasses other key disciplines as well, such as quality, science, and operations.
Martin highlighted key areas where ISPE is shaping the future of the pharmaceutical industry. First, he emphasized the organization’s role in preparing and publishing guidance documents, which have become essential tools for knowledge sharing and industry best practices. The guides are created largely by volunteer experts within the ISPE network. He pointed to the recently published ISPE Good Practice Guide: Digital Validation as an example of ISPE’s commitment to equipping professionals with relevant insights in an ever-evolving technical landscape.
He also noted ISPE’s growing membership base, which at 22,500 members worldwide, provides a platform for connection and shared learning through conferences like the Europe Annual Conference, as well as training and development opportunities, such as the newly launched ISPE Academy— a continuing education and professional development program. The Academy reflects ISPE’s mission to provide accessible, high-quality training opportunities and to support lifelong learning.
He recognized ISPE’s member volunteers who contribute their time and talents to the organization’s initiatives. Behind every conference, training session, and guidance document are dedicated individuals who give their time and talent to create something useful and important, he said. He reserved a special thank you to the program committee and chair, Heather Watson, whose leadership helped bring this year’s conference to life.
Martin also spoke appreciatively for the essential support of sponsors and corporate partners. Their contributions, he said, are critical in making ISPE events possible and ensuring that knowledge-sharing continues year-round. He described it as a powerful network of collaboration among organizations, individuals, and industries working together to advance pharmaceutical science and manufacturing.
Another highlight of Martin’s address was his recognition of the next generation of industry professionals. He acknowledged the 14 students in attendance who received scholarships and grants funded by donations from ISPE members and their companies. Their presence, he said, represents the energy and passion that will carry the life sciences industry into the future.
Martin celebrated three important ISPE milestones: the 45th anniversary of the organization’s founding, the 20th anniversary of the Facility of the Year Awards (FOYA), and the 15th anniversary of the ISPE GAMP Community of Practice in the United Kingdom. These milestones demonstrate the power of a committed group of volunteers to shape the industry.
Martin mentioned the upcoming ISPE AI® GAMP® Artificial Intelligence Guide—an example of the organization’s forward-thinking regarding emerging technologies.
He discussed ongoing efforts to create a new strategic vision for ISPE, to be unveiled at the 2025 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina, US, in October. This vision, Martin said, will look beyond the traditional focus on facilities, manufacturing systems, and regulatory frameworks. Instead, it will focus on a broader mission: enhancing the quality of human life. It will be grounded in personal and organizational values—integrity, collaboration, and curiosity.
He outlined the three pillars on which ISPE stands:
- Knowledge: Lifelong, collective learning, sharing best practices, and continuously growing together.
- Community: Emphasizing connection, enthusiasm, shared experiences, and opportunity.
- Innovation: Sharing ideas to build better solutions through collective creativity.
Martin described the concept of the pre-competitive space, an environment fostered by ISPE that motivates an open exchange of ideas in a safe and collaborative setting. This space, he said, is essential to driving continuous improvement and innovation.
In closing remarks, he shared his vision that ISPE members experience the power of knowledge, community, and innovation. Through their involvement, he said, they will not only be able to advance their careers but also contribute to the growth and learning of their peers.
