The ISPE United Kingdom Affiliate has long stood as a vibrant hub for collaboration, technical exchange, and professional growth within the pharmaceutical engineering community. Under the leadership and advocacy of industry professionals like Zam Thahir—Chair of the ISPE UK Affiliate and Chair of the ISPE European Affiliates Council—the UK Affiliate continues to expand its impact through programs, events, and initiatives designed to elevate both established professionals and the next generation of leaders.

Thahir, Director of Global Engineering Operations and Strategy at GSK, is deeply committed to strengthening engagement across the ISPE network, drawing on a career that includes roles at Cambrex, Boston Scientific, Thermo Fisher Scientific, IPS and Mace Consult. An alumnus of the University of Cambridge and a chartered Process and Chemical Engineer, Thahir combines strong technical expertise in process optimization, critical utilities, technology transfer, statistical process control, and facility design with a passion for collaboration. He actively contributes to several ISPE Communities of Practice (CoPs)—while championing shared learning, collaborative problem-solving, and opportunities for meaningful membership involvement. He also established the ISPE Emerging Leaders program in the UK, building it from the ground up and continues to serve as a powerful advocate for the industry’s emerging talent—creating a visible, vibrant platform that empowers the next generation of pharma professionals. His technical insight and dedication to community building continue to shape the Affiliate’s strategic direction and energize its membership.

Reflecting on the ISPE UK Affiliate Annual Conference and Awards Dinner

ISPE UK North West Committee – Organizing Committee of the 2025 Annual Conference & Awards Dinner

The ISPE UK Affiliate Annual Conference and Awards Dinner is ISPE UK’s flagship event. In 2025, it was held on 13 November 2025 in Manchester, England. Conference Chair and ISPE UK Vice Chair, Chris Leman (Global Commissioning and Qualification Director at AstraZeneca) and the ISPE UK North West Committee delivered an outstanding conference centered on “Transitioning UK Pharma Operations to Confront Global Pharma Challenges,” that captured the extraordinary resilience and innovation demonstrated by the UK pharmaceutical sector.

Despite global pressures and an increasingly complex marketplace, the UK continues to be at the forefront of pharmaceutical manufacturing, research, and engineering. The 2025 event created a forum to address these complexities directly, bringing together pharma leaders, engineers, scientists, regulatory and quality professionals, academics, suppliers, and others working across the pharmaceutical lifecycle.

The accompanying black-tie awards dinner was a particular highlight—not only for its celebration of excellence but also for the sense of camaraderie it reinforced. For the first time, the event was captured on video, showcasing the energy, connection, and pride that shape the Affiliate’s culture.

Reflecting on the evening, Thahir shared how particularly proud he was of the awards program—highlighting how unique it is among the ISPE Affiliates for celebrating pharma excellence, recognizing Emerging Leaders, and, most importantly, honoring the invaluable contributions of volunteers. This year, Trina Ives won the coveted member of the year award and Shawn Whitfield won the prestigious Brian Sixmith Fellow Award for their incredible impact to the Affiliate through their volunteering efforts. All 2025 award winners are listed at the end of the blog post.

Other leaders echoed this sentiment. Hilary Mills-Baker, ISPE GAMP® UK Chair, emphasized how essential in-person events are for maintaining a shared sense of purpose. Mark Proctor (VP UK Operations at AstraZeneca) described the conference as an unmatched opportunity to reconnect and learn from one another. Chris Leman (AstraZeneca) noted the growing cross-industry and cross-continent collaboration on display, calling it “a real celebration of UK pharma.”

For those who missed the 2025 event, the 2026 ISPE UK Affiliate Annual Event is already on the horizon. Scheduled for 12 November 2026 at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Hotel and chaired by Trina Ives (ISPE UK North East Chair), the coming conference will center on “The Bridge to Innovation,” spotlighting cutting edge advances in pharmaceutical engineering and concluding with another signature awards dinner.

Championing the Next Generation: The United Kingdom Emerging Leaders Awards and Edu Hub

Members of the ISPE UK Emerging Leaders community

As part of the UK Affiliate’s Annual Awards Dinner, the Emerging Leaders Awards continue to play an important role in recognizing early-career talent within the pharmaceutical engineering community. Introduced in 2021 by Thahir and Craig Milner, this ongoing component of the awards program reflects the Affiliate’s commitment to fostering professional growth at every career stage.

The award categories were created to address a longstanding gap in the traditional lineup, which historically focused on honoring senior leaders or long serving members. The Emerging Leaders Awards broadened the scope by providing space to acknowledge individuals under 30—whether students, apprentices, interns, recent graduates, or young professionals—who are contributing to the UK pharma and manufacturing landscape. Anyone who meets the criteria is encouraged to apply each year. All past winners of the ISPE UK Emerging Leaders Award are proudly commemorated on a Wall of Fame.

Over time, the program has become a consistent and meaningful thread throughout the Affiliate’s broader support for rising professionals. In addition to the annual awards, the Emerging Leaders group organizes year-round activities designed to inspire, educate, and connect young talent. The Affiliate’s academic outreach has also expanded, with Student Chapters established at universities in Leeds, Sheffield, and Manchester—offering early pathways into ISPE engagement even before students enter the workforce.

Looking ahead, the 2026 Emerging Leaders Awards will again form a valued part of the UK Affiliate Annual Awards Dinner, continuing to highlight young engineers and scientists making noteworthy contributions to the industry. Applications typically open in the summer, and interest has steadily grown as awareness strengthens across the sector.

The Edu Hub was also introduced in 2025 to the Annual Conference agenda to specifically cater the conference for students, apprentices and recent graduates. The ISPE UK Affiliate took best practices from the European Hackathon and Irish Affiliate’s Edu Hub to organize a team competition where the participants are given a real-world pharma engineering/manufacturing challenge to address. The inaugural Edu Hub, sponsored by Beritech Pharmapipe, was a great success to inspire school students from the Manchester region to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical sector.

Celebrating Technical Excellence: The Pharma Excellence Awards

Members of the ISPE UK Board with ISPE International Leadership team reflecting on the inaugural Pharma Excellence awards and its evolution for 2026

In 2025, the Pharma Excellence Awards category was added to the portfolio of awards presented at the ISPE UK Annual Awards Dinner. Three focus areas were selected to spotlight outstanding UK pharmaceutical projects demonstrating excellence in Manufacturing Innovation, Sustainability, and Collaboration.

The initiative has already proven successful in several ways. It has attracted new prospective members with no prior connection to ISPE, while the awards themselves are recognized as a peer-reviewed mark of credibility within the industry and is generating considerable interest among the manufacturing organizations.

Notably, the winners of the Manufacturing Innovation Award, 3P Innovation and Nova Labs, further strengthened engagement by hosting a site visit in February 2026, offering members an opportunity to experience their award-winning innovation firsthand.

Looking ahead, the 2026 Pharma Excellence Awards plans to expand to a fourth category to add Pharma 4.0™ to showcase the best use of digitalization and artificial intelligence in a pharma manufacturing/engineering setting.

A Community Built on Collaboration and Shared Purpose

The panel sessions at the ISPE UK Annual Event has become one of the most popular sessions as it focuses on the soft skills and human aspect of working in the pharma sector with refreshingly honest reflections from the Emerging Leaders, Women in Pharma and Senior Leadership communities

At the heart of everything the ISPE UK Affiliate does—from annual conferences to CoP engagement to Emerging Leaders and Women in Pharma® programming—is a commitment to community. Thahir’s vision emphasizes collaboration as a driver of innovation and personal growth. He continues to advocate for a thriving, interconnected network where members support one another, share expertise, and contribute to the advancement of pharmaceutical science and engineering.

The Affiliate’s volunteer base plays a vital role in advancing this mission. With active CoPs in GAMP®, Commissioning and Qualification, Pharma 4.0, Women in Pharma, and Emerging Leaders, their commitment and dedication ensures that programs remain relevant, events run smoothly, and members feel welcomed and valued. Annual social events such as Pharmafest and the Golf Day add another important dimension—creating opportunities to build meaningful relationships beyond the workplace. This strong spirit of service and collaboration is one of the reasons that makes the UK Affiliate not just a regional group, but a genuine community with a deep sense of belonging to the global ISPE family.

ISPE offers pathways into a collaborative, innovative global network committed to advancing life sciences worldwide.
