Shaping the Future of the Next Generation of Pharma Leaders

Mike Martin
Students Attending an ISPE Conference

A Message from the President and CEO, ISPE

Walk into any ISPE conference and you’ll sense a certain kind of energy if you’re paying attention.

Among the experienced technical leaders, seasoned quality leaders, and executives discussing strategy, there is another group moving through the halls with a different kind of spirit. They ask thoughtful questions. They listen carefully. They might carry notebooks, resumes, and might have more curiosity than certainty.

They are students and recent graduates.

If you pause to talk with them, you’ll be reminded of something many of us haven’t thought about in a long time: what it feels like to be new.

Starting a career in an industry as complex as pharmaceuticals can be both exciting and intimidating. This next generation of professionals entering the field are stepping into a world filled with technical language, regulatory frameworks, complex manufacturing technologies, and global supply chains. There is a lot to learn.

Most of them are asking themselves the same questions many of us asked when we started: Where do I fit? What path should I take? Who will help me understand this industry?

Their questions matter. And how we respond matters even more.

The pharmaceutical industry depends on the steady renewal of talent. The work we do, developing and manufacturing medicines that improve and save lives, demands both technical excellence and a sense of purpose. Every generation must pass that responsibility to the next.

The encouraging part is that the next generation is already showing up.

Last year, the ISPE Foundation sponsored more than 100 students and recent graduates to attend ISPE conferences around the world. These individuals were not simply observers. They were engaged, thoughtful, and inspiring.

At the 2025 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, many of these students and recent graduates were seated together during sessions and ancillary events. Their energy was unmistakable. They moved from watching presentations to the career center, where they spoke directly with industry leaders about opportunities, career paths, and the many ways that people can contribute to this field.

Their eagerness to learn and their genuine desire to be part of an industry dedicated to improving the quality of human life stands out clearly.

That kind of energy and passion should remind all of us of something important.

None of us arrived here on our own.

Every one of us benefited from someone who took a few minutes to explain a concept, open a door, introduce us to a colleague, or simply say, “you belong here!” Those small moments of guidance and encouragement shape careers more than we realize. Think of what someone did for you and how it helped you. The future of our industry will depend on how we provide those same opportunities for the next generation.

The ISPE Foundation exists for exactly this purpose. Its mission is focused entirely on this next generation, helping them discover our industry, understand its opportunities, and connect with professionals who can guide them forward.

The demand is growing rapidly. Several hundred students have applied to attend upcoming ISPE conferences, and the ISPE Foundation is working to support as many as possible.

But sponsorship alone is not enough.

Students and recent graduates benefit most when experienced professionals engage with them directly. A conversation over coffee. A few minutes of career advice. A willingness to explain how your role fits into the broader mission of developing and delivering medicines.

Those interactions matter so much more than you might imagine.

So how can you help?

First, engage with students and recent graduates when you see them at conferences. Introduce yourself. Ask about their interests. Share your experience.

Second, form relationships. Offer guidance. Mentor when you can. Encourage them to explore the many possibilities that exist within our industry: from engineering and manufacturing to quality, regulatory science, digital technologies, and beyond.

Third, support the work of the ISPE Foundation.

Individual donations make a difference, but there are other ways to contribute as well. Consider encouraging your company to make a donation. If your organization has a corporate foundation, explore whether it can support the ISPE Foundation’s mission.

Every contribution helps expand access for students and recent graduates who are eager to learn and ready to begin their journey.

The pharmaceutical industry has always been about something bigger than any one company or career. It is about improving the quality of human life.

The next generation of leaders entering our field today will carry that responsibility forward.

Let’s make sure they know we are ready to welcome them.
