Out of more than 150 applicants in the program's first year, nine emerging pharmaceutical professionals were selected to receive the inaugural Jack Lysfjord Grant, which supported 2026 ISPE Aseptic Conference attendance. They arrived in Washington, D.C., USA as students and early career professionals. They left as something more—connected, challenged, and with a clearer sense of where they fit in this industry.

The Conference Experience

On 23-24 March, the grant recipients joined global experts at the 2026 ISPE Aseptic Conference—one of the industry's most focused forums for advancing aseptic manufacturing practice. This is where challenges are examined, solutions are debated, and direction is set.

Conference topics this year included:

  • Airflow testing
  • Annex 1 and case studies
  • ATMPs and multiproduct facilities
  • Component quality
  • Facility design
  • Isolator and restricted access barrier systems design
  • Lyophilization
  • Radiopharmaceuticals and high potent compounds
  • Sterile processing
  • 503B

For these young professionals, this was not theoretical learning. It was direct exposure to how decisions are made, how experienced leaders think, and how the industry moves. That shift—from classroom understanding to real-world context—is where development accelerates.

What the Grant Provided

The Jack Lysfjord Grant was designed to remove financial and access barriers. Jack Lysfjord helped define the pharmaceutical industry through his pioneering work in aseptic manufacturing and contamination control, as well as his foundational role in creating the ISPE Aseptic Conference. His legacy lives on through a commitment to developing people and advancing knowledge—principles embodied in the Jack Lysfjord Grant, which invests directly in the next generation of industry leaders.

Each Jack Lysfjord Grant recipient received:

  • Full conference participation and travel support: These individuals were in the room, engaging with the most relevant conversations shaping aseptic manufacturing today. They were also formally recognized during the conference, because visibility matters. It reinforces that they belong here.
  • Executive mentorship and direct engagement: A highlight of the program was dedicated time with senior industry leaders. Not presentations. Conversations—the kind that shape perspective, challenge assumptions, and build lasting confidence.
  • Two-year ISPE student membership: The ISPE experience extends well beyond the conference by connecting recipients to the ISPE community and its ongoing exchange of knowledge.

Meet the Inaugural Grantees

The individuals selected represent the capability and potential of the next generation of aseptic processing professionals:

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who took the time to share their knowledge and experiences during the ISPE Aseptic Conference in Washington, DC. As an MSc student in Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Management at UCL Global Business School for Health, meeting and chatting with professionals in the field was a highlight of the experience. It gave me a much deeper understanding of aseptic manufacturing and the role of the FDA beyond what we learn in the classroom. What stood out most was hearing about the real challenges teams face and how they work through them in practice. This experience has been incredibly valuable and has helped shape how I think about my future career in the industry.

The Impact Was Immediate

The immediate impact of the grant on its recipients was evident in how they engaged—both in the questions they asked and the conversations they initiated. By the end of the conference, they were not on the outside looking in. They were part of the discussion.

Several themes defined the experience:

  • From theory to application: They left with a practical understanding of how aseptic principles are applied in real operating environments.
  • Confidence through connection: The relationships formed will extend well beyond the conference walls.
  • A clearer path forward: Many walked away with a sharper sense of direction and a better understanding of how they can contribute to the industry.

From my perspective, the most important outcome was this: they felt part of the industry. That is the inflection point. That is exactly what this program was designed to create.

Spending time with these students and young professionals was one of the most rewarding parts of the conference. They were energized, curious, and willing to step forward. The impact of the experience manifested in real time. That is Jack's legacy at work—not in theory, but in people.
