Janssen Vaccines AG located in Bern, Switzerland is this year’s Facility of the Year Awards (FOYA) winner for Project Execution for their “Fast Track Refurbishment for Ebola Vaccine Production” program.

Janssen Vaccines AG, one of Janssen Pharmaceuticals Companies of Johnson & Johnson (Janssen), has a long standing commitment and expertise in vaccine development and production. In response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, Johnson & Johnson, with the highest priority and full support from senior management, committed to a program for rapid development of an Ebola vaccine. A site was selected for the preparation of first clinical trial material and the parallel establishment of manufacturing capacity at sufficiently large scale for a supply of up to five million doses. 2016 Facility of the Year Awards Winner for Project Execution - Janssen Vaccines Facility To achieve their goal, the Janssen team refurbished a recently vacated facility in Bern, which had begun a phase-out and shutdown program. The site was selected for its qualified people and its readily available infrastructure. The successful execution of the project was achieved by teaming up the process designers, technology transfer team and facility designers to define the requirements in close collaboration.   Project Highlights:

  • Delivered the project on time within a very short schedule by driving risk-based, concurrent tasks in process development, facility design and construction
  • 2016 Facility of the Year Awards Winner for Project Execution - Janssen Vaccines EmployeesCreated a mission-focused team with great dedication and the spirit to succeed.
  • Purpose of fighting the Ebola disease created commitment and attention among stakeholders, team members and contractors and created a high visibility throughout Johnson & Johnson and the public. Schedule adherence was a given ultimate goal.
  • Collaboration of all entities on-site necessary forged a team spirit that prepared them for the next challenges

2016 Facility of the Year Awards Winner for Project Execution - Janssen Vaccines FacilityThis small but fast track project is exemplary for good team building, cost control and stakeholder communication. The project closed with a lessons learned exercise which revealed once more how motivated and dedicated the team members were and still are. Coming at a time of phase-out production on-site, this project created a new spirit in Bern, Switzerland. Its successful completion filled Janssen with pride for delivering on the challenge to fight one of the deadliest diseases in the world and global public health emergency.
