ISPE Nordic Annual Meeting 2026: AI, Innovation Highlights, Plus a Preview of the 2026 ISPE Europe Annual Conference

The ISPE Nordic Affiliate Annual Meeting 2026, held at AstraZeneca’s Södertälje site in Sweden, brought together over 100 pharma leaders, regulators, and innovators - participants came from across the Nordic region and beyond.

The day focused on how AI and digitalization are transforming the industry, and it was a powerful reminder of why our community exists: sharing knowledge, building connections, and turning innovation into real-world impact - the three pillars of ISPE’s mission to improve the quality of human life.

From the start, the room was engaged and lively. Opening remarks from Fredrik Åsell (AstraZeneca) and the author set the tone: innovation and compliance can work hand-in-hand to make pharma safer and more efficient. Drawing on the author’s experience as a former US Food and Drug Administration inspector, it was inspiring to see regulatory insight and operational excellence meet in practice.

Key Insights from the Day

AI and Regulatory Perspectives

Rebecka Isaksson and Samuel Fransson (Swedish Medical Products Agency) discussed how AI can support regulators while keeping patient safety at the forefront.

Piotr Frelek (eLifeSciences) reminded us that strong data is the foundation of any digital strategy—without it, even the smartest tools fail.

Paolo Braiuca (Seeq Corporation) shared how AI and analytics can improve process quality, catch issues in real time, and deliver better outcomes for both companies and patients.

Practical Applications in Daily Work

Tatiane Hedegaard and Matthias Mann (Novo Nordisk) demonstrated how digitalizing batch release processes speeds up work while maintaining quality.

Austin Caudle and Mihaela Carmen Simianu, PhD (SmartSkin Technologies) showcased digital container twins, turning mechanical stress on injectable containers into measurable data. This allows teams to validate processes faster, reduce investigations, and strengthen process robustness. These examples weren’t just interesting—they are ideas teams can take back and use in their daily work.

Risk Management and Compliance

Sebastian Scheler (InnerSpace) explored data-driven quality risk management to accelerate commercialization.

Felipe Fontanet (GMP Bridge) and Chris Dayton (Quality Assured AI) explained how to design AI projects that meet regulatory rules from the start.

Anna Forsberg and Anders Karlsson (AstraZeneca) discussed moving from document-focused to data-focused submissions, highlighting both challenges and opportunities.

Learning and Networking

Beyond the sessions, conversations over coffee and lunch were just as valuable. Sharing experiences, asking questions, and exchanging solutions reminded me that ISPE is about people learning from people—practical knowledge that can be applied immediately.

aWe would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the speakers for their expertise and dedication, AstraZeneca Sweden Operations for hosting, attendees for joining (including those from across the region and beyond), and annual sponsors ZETA and COPA-DATA, as well as the ISPE Nordic Affiliate Board colleagues who made the day possible.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 ISPE Europe Annual Conference

The 2026 ISPE Europe Annual Conference, taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark, 20–22 April, will provide a comprehensive view of how global pharmaceutical manufacturing is evolving—scientifically, technologically, operationally, and culturally. Copenhagen, as host city, offers an ideal environment for these discussions, bringing together longstanding Nordic traditions of quality, efficiency, and innovation. Across the three‑day program, leaders from industry, academia, and regulatory authorities will examine the most significant forces shaping the future of life sciences in Europe and beyond.

A central theme running throughout the conference is the increasing convergence of digital transformation, sustainability requirements, and advanced manufacturing modalities. Several sessions will highlight the practical implications of integrating AI, robotics, and data‑centric workflows into regulated environments. This aligns with the Nordic region’s deep experience with scalable digitalization—particularly in quality‑critical operations. Presentations on autonomous manufacturing for cell therapies, a digital future for chemistry, manufacturing, and controls, and value‑driven Pharma 4.0™ strategies will offer delegates insight into the standards, methodologies, and governance structures required to ensure digital initiatives deliver measurable benefit. Sessions will support the broader aim of enabling professionals to observe AI and digitalization in action, exchange knowledge with peers from across Europe and around the world, and return with ideas that can be applied in routine operations.

Sustainability will serve as another key pillar of the 2026 program. With regulatory expectations tightening and environmental reporting becoming more granular, organizations are seeking approaches that balance compliance, resilience, and cost efficiency. The Sustainability and Substances of Concern track will examine methods for decarbonizing facilities, optimizing energy and water usage, and designing systems that prioritize circularity and lifecycle thinking. The Nordics’ leadership in green manufacturing provides a strong platform for dialogue on water-for-injection generation innovations, high‑purity water stewardship, and the business cases supporting investment in greener operations.

Regulatory and compliance perspectives will also be well represented. Sessions focused on risk‑based Annex 1 implementation, contamination control, and harmonized global post‑approval change strategies will provide clarity on evolving expectations. Discussions on cross‑functional GxP frameworks, explainable compliance, and the governance of AI systems aim to help organizations strengthen quality while enabling innovation. These themes reflect growing recognition that when industry comes together, shares knowledge, and collaborates, progress accelerates and innovation improves—benefiting teams, organizations, and ultimately the patients served by the life science sector.

Throughout the conference, attendees will have opportunities to connect with leaders shaping the next era of pharmaceutical manufacturing. With Copenhagen as the backdrop, the 2026 ISPE Europe Annual Conference encourages broad participation from across Europe and around the world, reinforcing the value of collective insight and shared learning as the industry moves forward.
