ISPE Member Spotlight: Reflections from Ada Torrella González, ISPE Foundation Professional Development Grant Recipient

What inspired you to attend the 2026 ISPE Europe Annual Conference and what you were hoping to gain from the experience as a recent graduate?

Attending the 2026 ISPE Annual Conference in Copenhagen was inspired by my strong interest in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, particularly in how innovation, regulation, and manufacturing practices come together to ensure safety and product quality. As a recent graduate in pharmacy, I saw this conference as a unique opportunity to step beyond the academic environment and gain first-hand exposure to current industry trends, challenges, and best practices. I was specially motivated by the chance to connect with professionals from diverse sectors and countries, including engineering, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, and to better understand the career paths available within the industry. Additionally, I hoped to deepen my knowledge of GMP standards and emerging technologies that are shaping the future of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Ultimately, my goal was to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, while building a professional network that could support my transition into the industry. I also aimed to gain inspiration and clarity about my future career direction by learning from experienced professionals and industry leaders.

From what you saw and experienced at the conference, how do you think ISPE is helping shape the future of the pharmaceutical industry, especially for the next generation of professionals?

From what I observed during the conference, ISPE plays a key role in shaping the future of the pharmaceutical industry by foresting collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing across different sectors. The event brought together professionals from industry, academia, and regulatory bodies, creating a platform where current challenges and emerging trends could be openly discussed. This kind of exchange is essential for driving continuous improvement and ensuring that the industry keeps evolving to meet global healthcare needs. For the next generation of professionals, ISPE provides valuable opportunities to engage directly with experienced experts and gain insights that go far beyond what is taught in academic settings. Through sessions, panels, and networking activities, students and recent graduates can better understand real-world applications of GMP, digital transformation, and sustainable manufacturing practices. Additionally, ISPE actively supports young professionals by encouraging their participation and offering mentorship and career development opportunities. This investment in early-career talent helps build a more prepared, informed, and connected workforce that will be capable of leading the industry in the future. Overall, ISPE serves as a bridge between education and professional practice.

As a new ISPE member, how did attending an international conference shape your perspective on the global pharmaceutical industry and your place within it?

Attending an international conference like the ISPE Europe Annual Conference significantly broadened my perspective on the global pharmaceutical industry. As a new ISPE member, it was my first time experiencing such a diverse and international environment, where professionals from different countries, backgrounds, and areas of expertise came together with a shared goal: improving pharmaceutical quality and patient outcomes. This helped me realize how interconnected and collaborative the industry truly is. I gained a deeper understanding of how global regulatory frameworks, cultural approaches, and technological advancements influence the way pharmaceutical products are developed and manufactured worldwide. It also highlighted the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in such a fast-evolving field. From a personal perspective, the experience made me feel more confident about my place within the industry. Interacting with professionals at different stages of their careers showed me that there are many possible paths to follow. It reinforced my motivation to contribute to the industry and confirmed that, even as a recent graduate, I can play a meaningful role in its future through dedication, learning, and collaboration.

How do you see this experience influencing your academic path or early career, and what advice would you give to other ISPE students or recent graduates who are considering attending a future ISPE conference?

This experience has had a meaningful impact on how I approach both my academic path and early career planning. After attending the conference, I feel more motivated to focus on areas that are highly relevant to the industry, such as GMP, regulatory compliance, and emerging technologies like digitalization in pharmaceutical manufacturing. It also encouraged me to be more proactive in seeking opportunities beyond the classroom, such as internships, networking and continues professional development through organizations like ISPE. In terms of my early career, the conference helped me better understand the diversity of roles available and the importance of developing both technical knowledge and soft skills, such as communication and adaptability. It gave me clearer direction and increased my confidence in pursuing a career within the pharmaceutical industry. My advice to other ISPE students would be to take full advantage os these conferences. Be curious, attend a wide range of sessions, and to not hesitate to network with professionals. Even if it feels intimidating at first, these interactions can be incredibly valuable. Overall, it is a unique opportunity to learn, connect, and gain inspiration for your future career.
