Insights from Keira Mull
What is your current role, and what are your primary areas of expertise within the pharmaceutical industry?
I am a Senior Manufacturing Specialist at AstraZeneca, where I partner with cross-functional teams to support manufacturing performance, product quality, and patient safety. My expertise includes site strategy, risk management, investigations, corrective and preventive actions management, process improvement, and operational excellence. After beginning my career in quality control (QC), I transitioned into manufacturing-focused roles supporting complex technical and operational initiatives. I enjoy collaborating across functions to identify risks, implement improvements, and strengthen manufacturing processes. One of my greatest strengths is translating complex scientific and technical challenges into practical, sustainable solutions that align quality, manufacturing, and business objectives. Ultimately, I am passionate about driving continuous improvement and helping teams deliver high-quality products that make a meaningful difference for patients.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry, and what continues to motivate you professionally today?
My journey into the pharmaceutical industry was unexpected. As a pre-med student, I originally planned to become a physician, but graduating during the COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity to reevaluate my career goals. I realized I was passionate about improving patient outcomes and was drawn to the pharmaceutical industry because it combines science, innovation, and large-scale impact. An entry level QC position at AstraZeneca introduced me to an industry where the work performed behind the scenes directly contributes to improving and saving lives. Today, I am motivated by opportunities to continuously learn, solve complex challenges, and collaborate with talented professionals who share a common mission. I am especially energized by work that improves product quality, patient safety, and manufacturing reliability, as well as opportunities to mentor others and contribute to the development of future industry leaders.
How long have you been involved with ISPE, and what originally prompted you to become a member?
I have been actively involved with ISPE through the Chesapeake Bay Area Chapter for several years. I initially became involved to expand my professional network, learn from industry leaders, and gain exposure to areas of the pharmaceutical industry beyond my day-to-day responsibilities. Through local Chapter events, I connected with professionals across manufacturing, quality, engineering, regulatory affairs, and leadership while benefiting from ISPE's focus on education, professional development, and collaboration. What began as a networking opportunity quickly evolved into a meaningful professional community. As graduate students, Allyssa Wilcox and I were encouraged by Hamid Teimourian to help establish and co-chair the Chesapeake Bay Area Student Committee. We saw an opportunity to create the resources, industry connections, and professional exposure that we wished we had when starting our own careers. This role has allowed me to support students and emerging professionals while continuing to grow and develop as a professional myself.
How has ISPE membership helped you grow professionally and personally?
ISPE has been one of the most impactful organizations in my professional and personal development. Through chapter events, educational programs, volunteer leadership, and networking opportunities, I have expanded my industry knowledge, built a strong professional network, and gained confidence as a leader. One of the most transformative experiences was receiving an ISPE Foundation Professional Development Grant, which enabled me to attend the 2025 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina. The experience expanded my professional network, connected me with mentors and industry leaders from around the world, and strengthened my confidence as an emerging leader. Through serving on the Chesapeake Bay Area Chapter Board and co-chairing the Student Committee, I have strengthened my communication, collaboration, and leadership skills. Most importantly, ISPE has shown me that leadership is not defined by title or experience alone, but by a commitment to continuous learning, service, mentorship, and creating opportunities for others.
What do you value most about being part of the ISPE community?
What I value most about ISPE is its strong sense of community, collaboration, and shared purpose. ISPE brings together students, emerging professionals, technical experts, and industry leaders who are all committed to advancing pharmaceutical manufacturing and serving patients. Throughout my involvement, I have experienced firsthand the willingness of members to share their knowledge, offer guidance, and support one another’s growth. Some of the most valuable lessons I have learned came not from formal presentations, but from conversations with chapter members, mentors, and fellow volunteers. The organization’s culture of collaboration, mentorship, and continuous learning is what makes ISPE truly unique. I especially appreciate ISPE’s commitment to developing the next generation of professionals while fostering an environment of learning, service, and collaboration. It’s more than a professional organization; it’s a community where professionals at every career stage can thrive because its members genuinely invest in one another’s success.
How have you been involved with ISPE's Women in Pharma® program, and why is the program important to you? How has that experience influenced your professional growth and leadership journey?
I have participated in ISPE's Women in Pharma® program through networking, professional development, mentorship, and leadership-focused events at both the local and national levels. One particularly meaningful experience was attending the Women in Pharma networking event at the 2025 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo. The program is important to me because it provides opportunities for women to build meaningful connections, learn from accomplished leaders, and gain valuable mentorship and support. Seeing successful women lead across technical, operational, and executive roles reinforces the importance of representation and highlights what’s possible for future generations of leaders. Through these experiences, I have become more intentional about my own leadership journey and more confident in pursuing growth opportunities. Women in Pharma has strengthened my commitment to mentorship, relationship-building, and creating opportunities that help individuals reach their full potential.
Can you share a favorite ISPE experience or accomplishment that had a meaningful impact on your development?
One of my most meaningful ISPE experiences has been helping establish and co-chair the Chesapeake Bay Area Student Committee alongside Allyssa Wilcox. Our goal was to create stronger connections between students, universities, and industry professionals while helping students better understand the opportunities available within the pharmaceutical industry. Through outreach, networking, and mentorship initiatives, we increased student engagement, tripled student membership within the committee's first 1.5 years, and established stronger relationships with local universities and faculty. Watching students become more engaged, confident, and excited about their futures has been incredibly rewarding. The experience strengthened my leadership skills and reinforced my passion for mentorship, workforce development, and giving back to the industry.
How are you helping shape the future of the pharmaceutical industry through your work, volunteer leadership, or involvement with students and emerging professionals?
I believe the future of the pharmaceutical industry depends not only on innovation and technology, but also on developing the next generation of professionals. Through my role at AstraZeneca, I contribute to initiatives that strengthen manufacturing performance, contamination control, continuous improvement, and product quality to help ensure safe and effective medicines reach patients. Outside of work, I serve as Co-Chair of the ISPE Chesapeake Bay Area Student Committee, where I help connect students and emerging professionals with industry resources, mentorship, networking opportunities, and career guidance. Having recently completed my master of business administration while working full-time, I understand both the challenges and rewards of balancing professional growth, education, and career development. By helping students gain exposure to career opportunities and build professional connections, I hope to make the industry more accessible while developing future leaders who will drive innovation for years to come.
What current trend or innovation in the pharmaceutical industry excites you most, and why?
One of the trends that excites me most is the continued digital transformation of pharmaceutical manufacturing through artificial intelligence (AI), advanced analytics, rapid microbiological methods (RMMs), and real-time monitoring technologies. These innovations have the potential to transform how we identify trends, assess risks, and make data-driven decisions across manufacturing and quality systems. I am particularly interested in how AI can support investigation effectiveness, process monitoring, and continuous improvement efforts, while RMMs and real-time monitoring can enhance contamination control and provide faster insights. What excites me most is not the technology itself, but its ability to strengthen scientific decision-making and improve operational performance. When combined with strong technical expertise and quality oversight, these tools have the potential to enhance product quality, increase agility, and ultimately improve outcomes for patients.
What advice would you give to a professional who is just starting their career in the pharmaceutical industry?
My advice is to stay curious, be open to unexpected opportunities, and never stop learning. Some of the most rewarding career paths come from experiences you never planned for. My own journey began as a pre-med student, and a single opportunity at AstraZeneca ultimately led me to a career I had never considered. Ask questions, volunteer for projects that challenge you, and seek experiences that broaden your perspective, even if they feel outside your comfort zone. I also encourage early-career professionals to build relationships intentionally by finding mentors and developing a diverse network of peers and professionals across different functions. Understanding how functions such as manufacturing, quality, engineering, and regulatory affairs work together will help you become a more effective and well-rounded professional. Most importantly, remember that every role contributes to improving patient outcomes. Keeping that purpose at the center of your work will help you stay motivated, appreciate the impact of what you do, and navigate your career with confidence and purpose.
