On 17 September, I had the privilege of joining the Chapter’s 40th Anniversary Gala at The Marigold and celebrating how far that journey has come. The Chapter began in 1986 with about 25 members. Today it has 624 members, including 40 students. That growth represents much more than a membership number. It reflects four decades of volunteer leadership, knowledge sharing, professional relationships, and commitment to our industry.
The Chapter’s history is full of examples of people creating opportunities for others. By 1989, with roughly 400 members, the Chapter launched its first annual vendor show with 13 tables. Bob Lechich, Joe Manfredi, and Jon Tomson helped establish the student chapter program with the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ, USA. Over the years, the Chapter has continued to bring people together through educational programs, networking, student engagement, and industry events.
That is also what ISPE has meant to me personally. I joined almost 25 years ago because I was wrestling with problems that I was largely trying to solve in my own head. Some were technical. Others came from misunderstandings across organizations and functions. Then I attended an ISPE conference and met professionals dealing with many of the same issues. Hearing how they approached those problems changed the way I thought about my own work.
I joined ISPE and kept coming back. I built relationships, grew my skills, learned from others, and eventually had opportunities to share what I had learned. That cycle of learning and giving back remains one of the most powerful things about ISPE.
The gala created another opportunity to reconnect, share stories, and build new relationships.
Today that community extends far beyond any one chapter. ISPE has about 25,000 members across 41
Affiliates and Chapters, with members in 120 countries. We are focused on sharing knowledge, building community, and sparking innovation. Our reputation has been built through globally connected, peer-reviewed knowledge and, just as importantly, through people willing to share their experience with one another.
The next opportunity is to make that knowledge even easier to find, connect, and use. Imagine a combined, integrated, curated ISPE Body of Knowledge that is intelligently searchable. Imagine dramatically reducing the friction between someone encountering a problem and finding the right technical knowledge, experience, or person to help solve it. What could that do for individual growth, for our industry, and ultimately for the quality of human life?
The evening connected today’s community with photographs and stories from the chapter’s history.
Looking around the room, the future felt very real. There were people who helped build the Chapter, professionals carrying that work forward today, and younger members who will shape what comes next. Forty years is worth celebrating, but the real achievement is not simply longevity. It is a community that has been built, sustained, and renewed across generations.
Congratulations to the ISPE New Jersey Chapter, its volunteers, its leaders, and everyone who has contributed along the way. The first 40 years created a strong foundation. I am excited to see what the next 40 will bring.
Across career stages and generations, the strength of ISPE remains its people and their willingness to connect.
