ISPE’s Core Values: Curiosity that Drives Discovery
At the conference, I spent time reinforcing one of ISPE’s core values: lead with curiosity. Alongside acting with integrity and embracing collaboration, leading with curiosity is something I believe we should actively practice.
To bring that idea to life, I shared a simple, but intentionally misleading, math problem: a “proof” that 4 equals -4. At first glance, every step appears logical. But hiding within it is a fundamental flaw. The exercise isn’t about solving the equation; it’s about how you approach it. Do you accept what you see, or do you look deeper? Curiosity isn’t about being given the answer; it’s about being motivated to find it.
This mindset matters deeply in our industry. In aseptic processing, and across the life sciences, the biggest risks are often not visible. Systems can appear sound while harboring hidden vulnerabilities. Curiosity is what prompts us to pause, question assumptions, and look for what might be wrong, even when everything appears right.
“Connect” as a Measurable Outcome
Just as curiosity drives inquiry, connection enables progress.
The importance of connection is not just theoretical: it is grounded in experience. Early in my career, I led an aseptic filling operation where we required operators to assemble sterilized components inside the aseptic environment, a process that ultimately led to a media fill deviation. The root cause was not a single error, but a flawed system that relied on perfect execution under imperfect conditions. In hindsight, the solution was straightforward; it involved moving an equipment assembly step from post sterilization to the equipment preparation area prior to sterilization and thereby reducing intervention. The real lesson was this: we could have avoided that outcome if we had learned from others sooner or asked better questions earlier.
Curiosity helps us ask better questions. Connection helps us find better answers. That is why “Connect” is one of the measurable outcomes tied directly to ISPE’s strategic vision.
Connection goes beyond networking. It is about access: connecting people to knowledge, to experience, and to each other. It means creating opportunities for members at every stage of their career to engage, learn, and contribute.
ISPE today is a community of more than 25,000 members, supported by over 40 Affiliates and Chapters globally, and continuing to grow. But the true value of that reach lies in how we bring it together.
Within this community are individuals with extraordinary depth of knowledge. In every session, every conversation, and every interaction in the Expo Hall, there are people who have solved complex problems, learned through experience, and developed insights that others can benefit from.
ISPE is a place where you can learn what might go wrong before it happens to you. That only works if we actively engage with one another. If you have a challenge, share it. If you have experience, offer it. That exchange is where the real power of this organization lies.
Connection is not just an idea within our strategic vision: it is a measurable outcome we are committed to advancing. When we connect people effectively with the right knowledge and the right expertise at the right time, we accelerate learning, strengthen our industry, and improve outcomes for patients.

My message to our members is simple: use this global community. Talk to each other. Ask questions. Share challenges. If you have a problem, say it out loud. Someone here has likely faced something similar and can help you think through it.
