Driving ISPE's Strategic Vision: Innovation Through Shared Ideas

This past June at the 2026 ISPE AI in Life Sciences Summit – Powered by GAMP®, I spent time with professionals from across our industry discussing AI, emerging technologies, and what comes next for pharmaceutical manufacturing. Those conversations prompted me to reflect on a topic that was woven throughout the event: innovation and how it happens.

Innovation is one of those words we use frequently in our industry. It appears in conference presentations, strategic plans, and conversations about the future of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Yet when people hear the word "innovation," many immediately think of a dramatic breakthrough, a singular moment when a brilliant idea suddenly changes everything.

The reality is often very different.

The most meaningful innovations in our industry rarely begin as transformational breakthroughs. Instead, they start as small ideas. One person identifies a challenge. Another offers a different perspective. Someone else improves the concept, solves a technical obstacle, or finds a way to scale the solution. Over time, those individual contributions accumulate until something significant emerges.

That understanding is at the heart of one of ISPE's measurable goals, as stated in our strategic vision: Innovate.

Innovation Is a Team Sport

Innovation is not simply about invention. It is about connection.

New ideas often emerge when professionals share experiences, compare challenges, and learn from one another. That is why some of the most valuable moments at an ISPE event are not always the keynote presentations or technical sessions. Sometimes they happen during a networking break, over coffee, or in a conversation between professionals who may have never met before.

A simple question can unlock new possibilities: "I've got this challenge. Have you seen it before?"

Those conversations matter. Every member brings a unique perspective, shaped by their experiences, expertise, and role within the industry. When those perspectives are shared, new solutions become possible.

If you leave an ISPE event with a new idea, a new connection, or a new approach to a problem, you leave richer than when you arrived. Perhaps not financially, but certainly intellectually.

That exchange of knowledge is one of the most powerful drivers of innovation.

A Lesson from Single-Use Technologies

One of the clearest examples of innovation through collaboration can be found in the evolution of single-use technologies.

Today, single-use systems are common throughout biopharmaceutical manufacturing. They are an established part of many facilities and have transformed how organizations think about flexibility, contamination control, and operational efficiency.

But that transformation did not happen overnight.

The concept began with a relatively simple question: Could manufacturers reduce the need for cleaning and sterilization by using disposable components?

On its own, that idea was interesting but limited. Early applications focused on basic plastic bags, tubing, and relatively narrow use cases. The larger vision had not yet been realized.

Then the industry began building upon the idea.

Scientists explored material compatibility. Technical experts examined extractables and leachables. Engineers developed methods to scale systems from laboratory applications to commercial manufacturing environments. Suppliers improved component design.

Regulators helped establish expectations for adoption and implementation.

Each new contribution solved a problem. Each solution created opportunities for further progress.

Step by step, idea by idea, an industry-wide effort transformed a narrow concept into a foundational shift in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The breakthrough was not a single moment. It was the cumulative result of hundreds of ideas contributed by professionals across organizations, disciplines, and regions.

That is what innovation often looks like in practice.

Creating More Opportunities for Innovation

If breakthroughs emerge from shared ideas, then organizations must create environments where those ideas can move freely.

This is one of the reasons ISPE exists.

For decades, ISPE has provided a platform where professionals from manufacturing, engineering, quality, regulatory affairs, technology, and countless other specialties can come together to solve challenges collectively. Through conferences, training programs, guidance documents, Communities of Practice, Affiliates, and Chapters, members gain access to perspectives they would not encounter within their own organizations.

These interactions are not accidental. They are intentional opportunities to accelerate learning and advance the industry.

As part of our strategic vision, ISPE is committed to creating even more of these collaborative environments across technology, regulatory, and manufacturing disciplines.

We want to make it easier for members to contribute, participate, and exchange knowledge with one another.

Importantly, we also want to measure our progress.

One of the ways we are doing this is through our Engage platform, where we can assess participation levels and community activity. Our goal is not simply to increase engagement for engagement's sake. The goal is to increase the movement of ideas.

Because when ideas move, innovation follows.

Measuring What Matters

Innovation can sometimes feel difficult to quantify. Breakthroughs often occur years after the conversations, experiments, and collaborations that made them possible. Yet we know that innovation thrives in environments where people participate, contribute, and share knowledge openly.

That is why engagement matters.

When more professionals are actively involved in discussions, communities, and collaborative problem-solving, the likelihood of meaningful innovation increases. Every discussion creates an opportunity to learn. Every connection creates an opportunity to improve. Every shared experience contributes to the collective knowledge of our profession.

The challenge before us is not simply to generate more ideas. It is to create more opportunities for ideas to connect.

A Call to Action

At the heart of ISPE's measurable goal to innovate is the belief that meaningful innovation emerges through collaboration and the exchange of ideas.

Innovation is not only about the next groundbreaking technology or industry-defining breakthrough. It is about the next idea, and the opportunity for others to build upon it:

  • The idea you bring to a discussion
  • The experience you share with a colleague
  • The lesson you learned from a project that might help someone else succeed
  • The question you ask during a conference session
  • The conversation that begins during a networking break and continues long after the event ends

Innovation does not belong to a select group of inventors or visionaries. It belongs to all of us.

Every member has the opportunity to contribute to the next breakthrough by sharing knowledge, asking questions, and engaging with the broader ISPE community.

Because that is how meaningful progress happens.

One idea at a time, built together.
