Building a Community, Shaping the Future: Celebrating the Official Launch of the ISPE Greece and Cyprus Affiliate
After three years of volunteer-driven effort, the ISPE Greece and Cyprus Affiliate officially joins the global ISPE community, creating new opportunities for knowledge sharing, professional development, and industry collaboration across the region.
December 2025 marked a milestone that many of us had envisioned for years: the official establishment of the ISPE Greece and Cyprus Affiliate. What makes this achievement particularly meaningful is not only the creation of a new Affiliate within the global ISPE community, but the journey behind it. This milestone represents more than three years of consistent effort, collaboration, volunteer dedication, and a shared belief that the pharmaceutical professionals of Greece and Republic of Cyprus deserved a stronger platform for connection, knowledge exchange, and professional growth.
Today, the Greece and Cyprus Affiliate is proud to officially join the global ISPE network and contribute to a community that continues to shape the future of pharmaceutical manufacturing, engineering, quality, innovation, and operational excellence worldwide.
The pharmaceutical industry in Greece and Republic of Cyprus has evolved significantly over the last decade. Greece has emerged as one of the fastest-growing pharmaceutical manufacturing hubs in the region, with pharmaceutical exports at €2.8 billion in 2024 and contributing substantially to the national economy. The sector supports approximately 119,000 jobs and generates an estimated €6.9 billion contribution to GDP. Pharmaceutical products now represent one of the country’s most important export categories, demonstrating the increasing international footprint of the Greek life sciences industry.
Cyprus has also established a strong international pharmaceutical footprint despite its size. The sector directly employs more than 2,200 professionals and contributes significantly to the country’s export activity, with pharmaceutical exports reaching approximately USD$560 million in 2024. Cypriot pharmaceutical manufacturers have successfully developed a highly international presence, supplying products across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America while demonstrating a strong commitment to quality, innovation, and global collaboration.
Despite this momentum, professionals across both countries often lacked a dedicated regional platform where engineers, scientists, quality professionals, validation specialists, digitalization experts, regulatory leaders, and students could collaborate under a common vision. This realization became one of the driving forces behind our effort to establish the ISPE Greece and Cyprus Affiliate.
The Affiliate’s first in-person members event, held in Athens, Greece, in December 2025, brought together professionals from across the pharmaceutical ecosystem, including manufacturing, engineering, quality, regulatory affairs, consulting, academia, and digital transformation. More importantly, it demonstrated the enthusiasm and readiness of our local community to engage, contribute, and grow together.
One of the most exciting outcomes of these early efforts was the formation of four regional practice groups focused on manufacturing science and technology, pharmaceutical engineering, digitalization and Pharma 4.0™, and quality assurance and regulatory compliance. These groups have already become active forums for technical discussions, idea-sharing, and collaborative initiatives that connect professionals across organizations and disciplines.
Throughout 2025, the Affiliate also focused strongly on educational outreach and engagement with future industry professionals. In collaboration with the University of Athens Faculty of Pharmacy, the Affiliate organized student visits to pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, providing students with the opportunity to experience industrial operations firsthand and better understand the realities of pharmaceutical production environments.
Additionally, the Affiliate delivered educational presentations and practical workshops designed to bridge academic knowledge with real-world industry applications. One such workshop focused on risk-based approaches for effective process validation strategies, introducing students to the scientific and regulatory principles that support modern pharmaceutical manufacturing and validation programs. The level of engagement and curiosity demonstrated by the students reinforced ISPE’s belief that investing in emerging talent is essential for the future of our industry.
Education, mentorship, and professional development remain central pillars of the Affiliate’s vision. As the Affiliate continue to grow, it aims to strengthen connections between industry and academia, support the creation of student chapters, encourage volunteer leadership, and create meaningful opportunities for early-career professionals to engage with the broader pharmaceutical community.
Over the past months, the Affiliate has also organized open webinars and technical discussions that welcomed both ISPE members and non-members. Topics included the practical application of artificial intelligence and large language models within pharmaceutical operations, as well as discussions on the historical evolution and future direction of the pharmaceutical sector in Greece and internationally.
These initiatives reflect the core reason ISPE exists: creating a pre-competitive environment where professionals can openly share experiences, discuss challenges, and learn from one another for the benefit of patients and the industry as a whole.
As the Affiliate looks ahead, its members are particularly inspired by ISPE’s Strategic Vision and its commitment to enhancing the quality of human life through knowledge sharing and innovation. The strategic pillars of Knowledge, Community, and Innovation resonate strongly with the aspirations of the Greece and Cyprus Affiliate.
The Affiliate’s focus for the coming years is clear: to connect professionals across all career stages, expand technical education opportunities, strengthen Communities of Practice, develop mentorship pathways, support students and recent graduates, and contribute actively to the global ISPE network.
Most importantly, the Affiliate wants to create a vibrant and sustainable regional community where professionals feel empowered to learn, contribute, collaborate, and lead.
The establishment of the ISPE Greece and Cyprus Affiliate is not the conclusion of a journey—it is the beginning of a new chapter: a chapter built on collaboration, curiosity, volunteerism, and a shared commitment to advancing pharmaceutical excellence.
