A Message from Scott Billman, Senior Vice President Global Engineering, Technology, and Facilities with Solventum and Immediate Past Chair of the ISPE International Board of Directors

As the autumn leaves begin to turn, we approach an event I anticipate each year—the 2025 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo, 26 – 29 October in North Carolina, US, a state renowned for its thriving life sciences ecosystem, and where I have lived for more than 20 years. This year’s 2025 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo isn’t just another industry conference, it’s a convergence of thought leaders, innovators, and practitioners committed to advancing pharmaceutical science and manufacturing. The program is always rich with insights, and there are several sessions on this year’s agenda that I am already looking forward to attending. Below, I’ll highlight the sessions I’m most looking forward to and explain why I believe they are not to be missed.

The Future of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Digital Transformation Takes Center Stage

One track high on my must-attend list is focused on the digital transformation occurring through pharmaceutical manufacturing. As our industry grapples with rapid technological evolution, digital solutions, from data analytics to artificial intelligence, are fundamentally changing the ways we develop, produce, and deliver medicines.

These sessions promise to feature case studies from companies that have successfully integrated advanced digital tools into their workflows, resulting in improvements in efficiency, product quality, and compliance. I am particularly interested in learning how digital twins, predictive maintenance, and cloud-based quality management systems are being adopted in real-world settings. The panel of speakers includes both technology providers and end-users, ensuring a balanced perspective on the practical challenges and benefits of digital transformation. I’m hoping to walk away with concrete strategies that can be implemented in my own organization to drive value through smart digital adoption.

Advancing Sustainability in Pharma: Real-World Success Stories

Sustainability is no longer a buzzword in pharma, it’s a necessity. This year’s meeting features dedicated sessions on sustainable practices in pharmaceutical manufacturing, and it’s one I feel passionate about. The life sciences industry has a unique responsibility to not only improve human health but to do so in a way that protects the health of our planet.

The sustainability sessions will highlight case studies from companies that have successfully reduced waste, minimized energy consumption, and developed business processes to justify, approve, and track these programs. I’m particularly curious to hear how organizations are navigating the trade-offs between regulatory requirements, cost constraints, and environmental impact. Discussions around the circular economy, solvent recovery, and responsible sourcing are especially relevant as more organizations commit to ambitious environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. I hope to leave these sessions with actionable ideas for driving sustainability initiatives within my own team and a better understanding of the tools available to track and report on progress.

Networking, Innovation, and the Joy of Community

Beyond the formal sessions, what makes the 2025 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo truly special is the opportunity to connect with peers and innovators from all corners of the industry. North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park is a fitting backdrop for this gathering, as the region is home to a cluster of biotech and pharma companies, renowned universities, and world-class research institutes.

I look forward to the lively discussions during coffee breaks, the spontaneous idea-sharing over lunch, and the chance encounters that so often lead to new partnerships and collaborations. The exhibit hall, with its showcase of cutting-edge products and services, is another space I’ll be exploring with enthusiasm. Whether you’re a veteran attendee or new to ISPE, there’s a sense of community and shared purpose that infuses every moment of this meeting.

In addition to the couple of tracks I highlighted, as I look at the agenda and sessions, I am impressed with the collection of topics and industry experts that will be on display at this year’s conference. Each represents a facet of the broader challenges and opportunities shaping our industry. The 2025 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo is more than a chance to learn; it’s an opportunity to step back, see the bigger picture, and recommit ourselves to driving positive change and improving lives.

If you’re attending in North Carolina this October, I encourage you to seek out sessions that stretch your thinking, challenge your assumptions, and inspire you to act. With the pace of innovation accelerating and the world looking to pharma for answers, there’s never been a more pivotal time to connect, learn, and lead.

See you in North Carolina!
