Rui César Silva is a Manufacturing Science and Technology (MSAT) expert specializing in particle technology, with a strong focus on spray drying for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical applications. With over 8 years of experience in R&D, process engineering, and tech transfer, he has contributed to advancing complex formulation and industrialization efforts across drug substance and drug product platforms.
Rui has worked extensively with pharmaceutical CDMOs, where he played key roles in scaling particle engineering technologies—particularly spray drying—to commercial manufacturing. His technical expertise spans process intensification, computational fluid dynamics, process modeling, sterile manufacturing, and data science.
He has co-authored more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications, served as a special issue guest editor for MDPI journals, and mentored graduate students in areas such as particle size reduction and hollow-fiber crystallization. Rui is driven by a mission to enable innovation in pharmaceutical development through deep expertise in spray drying and data-informed process design.
Spray drying has become a key enabling technology for developing amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) to enhance solubility and bioavailability in poorly water-soluble drug candidates.
Pharmaceutical continuous manufacturing (CM) is recognized as a key process intensification technology, with investment expected to rise in the coming years and the focus shifting toward biologics. This article provides a review on the current state of CM implementation, offers insights into life cycle management and regulatory aspects, and explains how a data- and knowledge-centric approach...
