Sanofi’s Canadian operations are undergoing a major transformation as the global biopharmaceutical company deepens its commitment to environmental sustainability, community engagement, and greener manufacturing practices. This article highlights how Sanofi in Canada is integrating sustainability into both its infrastructure and its workplace culture, positioning the organization as a leader among environmentally conscious employers.
A central focus of Sanofi’s sustainability investment is its Toronto, Canada, campus, where the company has committed $180 million to modernize and upgrade facilities with the goal of reducing energy consumption, carbon emissions, and water usage. One of the most significant achievements from this investment is the construction of an advanced wastewater treatment and reuse plant, which has already earned external recognition. The plant received a 2025 Facility of the Year Award (FOYA) for Social Impact in Sustainability Excellence from ISPE—a prestigious acknowledgment within the pharmaceutical engineering community.
This wastewater facility filters and chemically treats all water emissions from the site, capturing a substantial portion for reuse. According to Jan Lutzen, Head of Site Engineering and Maintenance at Sanofi, the system recovers 500 cubic meters of water annually, equivalent to half a million [KL1.1]liters, reducing the site’s overall water consumption by more than 20 percent. Lutzen emphasizes that industrial processes are inherently resource intensive, and Sanofi’s efforts reflect a deliberate strategy to reduce its environmental footprint while maintaining high operational standards.
Sanofi’s Canadian operations have also achieved top performance across the company’s ten largest global sites, with a 23 percent reduction in energy consumption and more than a 30 percent reduction in carbon emissions year over year. These improvements demonstrate the company’s commitment to measurable, impactful sustainability outcomes.
Beyond infrastructure, Sanofi fosters a culture of environmental stewardship among its employees. The article profiles Azadeh Bojmehrani, Manager, Medical Information, who participates in several sustainability initiatives. One example is the on site employee run vegetable garden, where staff volunteer to plant, maintain, and harvest herbs and vegetables. This initiative not only promotes sustainability but also strengthens community and employee engagement.
Sanofi employees also contribute to the conservation of a 30 hectare area in nearby G. Ross Lord Park, partnering with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the University of Toronto to monitor plant and tree species. Sanofi is also improving the sustainability of its product packaging. For example, its new compact vaccine packaging eliminates PVC plastic and reduces packaging volume by up to 50 percent, lowering material use and environmental impact.
