Bioprocess Online Covers 2026 ISPE Facility of the Year Awards (FOYA) Sustainability Category Winner, Takeda

Takeda’s Vienna, Austria, manufacturing campus is demonstrating how pharmaceutical companies can decarbonize one of their most energy-intensive utility systems: high-pressure steam generation. In a recent interview with Bioprocess Online, Vienna Site Head Maria Löflund discussed the company’s AHEAD – Advanced Heat Pump Demonstrator project, which earned them 2026 ISPE FOYA category-winning recognition for sustainability.

Unlike conventional industrial heat pumps that struggle to achieve temperatures required for GMP sterilization, AHEAD employs a multi-stage design that combines high-temperature heat pumps with mechanical vapor recompression. Powered entirely by renewable electricity, the system upgrades waste heat from the site’s central chiller network into high-pressure steam. The resulting process delivers steam at up to 11 bar(a) and 184°C, meeting pharmaceutical sterilization requirements while reducing reliance on natural gas.

Sustainability was a key driver in the project’s design. AHEAD uses natural refrigerant n-butane (R600), selected for its negligible global warming potential and zero ozone depletion impact. Because butane is flammable, Takeda incorporated extensive safety measures, including a dedicated energy building, gas detection systems, forced ventilation, emergency shutdown mechanisms, pressure-relief systems, and rigorous operator training programs.

Integrating the first-of-its-kind system into an active GMP manufacturing facility presented significant challenges. Takeda minimized operational disruption by constructing a standalone utility building, conducting extensive simulations, and coordinating more than 10 engineering and construction partners. Existing conventional steam-generation assets remain fully validated as a backup, ensuring production continuity and regulatory compliance if AHEAD is offline.

The project is targeting up to an 80 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions from steam generation, equivalent to approximately 1,600 metric tons of avoided emissions annually at the Vienna site. Beyond emissions reduction, Takeda views AHEAD as a scalable model for other pharmaceutical and industrial facilities with suitable waste-heat sources. Notably, the company chose not to patent the technology, instead promoting open knowledge sharing to accelerate industrial decarbonization worldwide.
