The ISPE D/A/CH Affiliate, encompassing Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, represents a diverse and highly engaged community within one of Europe’s key pharmaceutical regions. The Affiliate was recognized as the largest of ISPE’s 40+ Affiliates and Chapters at the 2026 Facilities of the Future Conference in February, underscoring both the scale of the regional industry and the strength of its member network.

In the responses that follow, Gunter Baumgartner and Zen-Zen Yen offer insights into the Affiliate’s defining characteristics, its approach to fostering meaningful engagement, and the ways it continues to deliver value across the life sciences sector.

What makes your Affiliate unique within ISPE, and how has that identity shaped your growth and member engagement?

The ISPE D/A/CH Affiliate brings together three countries within a single affiliate—uniting one of the world’s strongest pharmaceutical regions. The D/A/CH area is a leading life sciences and manufacturing hub, characterized by a high concentration of pharmaceutical expertise, advanced engineering capabilities, and globally active companies. This unique ecosystem gives our community exceptional technical depth and industry relevance.

While operating across three countries introduces additional complexity and coordination challenges, it also creates significant value. The broader geographic scope fosters a richer, more diverse professional network, strengthening technical exchange and expanding collective expertise. Our inherently international structure further positions us to support and facilitate European-scale initiatives, such as the Annex 1 Symposium held this year in Lyon, France.

This identity has shaped ISPE D/A/CH into a highly practical and member-driven organization. Engagement is strong because members consistently find content that is directly applicable to their daily work. Through frequent events and volunteer-led activities, we maintain multiple touchpoints throughout the year. Ensuring that each working group hosts at least one annual workshop has been a key driver of sustained growth and community expansion.

What key initiatives or programs have contributed most to your Affiliate’s success and expansion in recent years?

ISPE D/A/CH combines long-established technical excellence with a consistent track record of early innovation. Our long-standing Communities of Practice (CoPs), such as GAMP®, Containment, Project Management, Critical Utilities, and Aseptic Processing, provide a strong and enduring foundation for technical exchange. The D/A/CH Affiliate has played key roles in the expansion and evolution of GAMP® and Pharma 4.0™ initiatives. In addition, the Affiliate has contributed to broader industry engagement through initiatives such as the Robotics of the Year Awards (RAYA).

We systematically align our activities and portfolio with evolving industry needs. Recent additions, such as the Special Interest Groups on Sustainability group and on Best Practices in Operational Excellence, respond to growing demand for structured knowledge exchange in areas critical to modern pharmaceutical manufacturing. Our regional working groups translate global regulatory frameworks and industry trends into actionable, region-specific implementation approaches. This enables members not only to access knowledge, but to actively co-develop best practices, benchmark performance, and address real-world regulatory and operational challenges.

While newer communities tend to focus on knowledge exchange and practical implementation, many of our long-standing groups have evolved to actively shape ISPE guidelines and support regulatory development. Key ISPE Guidance Documents, such as the ISPE Good Practice Guide: Water for Injection (WFI) Systems for membrane-based generation, the ISPE Good Practice Guide: Containment for Potent Compounds, and the ISPE Baseline® Guide: Pharma 4.0™ (First Edition), have been significantly driven by contributions from the ISPE D/A/CH Affiliate.

Beyond technical domains, ISPE D/A/CH invests in the long-term development of the industry. The local Emerging Leaders and Women in Pharma® communities have become strong and self-sustaining. Through structured programs including mentoring initiatives we support talent development across all career stages, from students to experienced professionals, ensuring continuity of expertise and leadership within the life sciences sector.

How does your Affiliate create value for both new and long-standing members, and what keeps them actively engaged?

The ISPE D/A/CH Affiliate creates value through three main strengths. First, we have long-standing members who actively shape how regulations are translated into practical implementation in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Their experience and leadership help define what compliance looks like in day-to-day operations.

Second, we offer many touchpoints throughout the year where members can meet regulatory experts, industry decision-makers, and peers, and stay connected to the latest developments. This continuous exchange helps members remain informed, engaged, and professionally relevant.

Third, our diverse communities provide multiple access points into the Affiliate, so there is truly something for everyone—whether the focus is on technical topics, leadership, emerging trends, or professional networking. This breadth makes it easy for members to find the right platform to contribute and stay involved.

Furthermore, our board operates on a multi-year term structure without yearly changes, which supports continuity in strategic development, and ensures consistent execution and growth across the Affiliate.

Can you share a standout success story or impact your Affiliate has had on the local life sciences community or industry?

It is genuinely difficult to narrow this down to just one success story, because there are many initiatives from ISPE D/A/CH that have had substantial impact on the local life sciences community and beyond.

Pharma 4.0™ was initiated in the D/A/CH region and has helped define how the industry approaches digital transformation, data integrity, and the integration of advanced technologies into pharmaceutical manufacturing. Other important initiatives include the Containment Guide, as well as the membrane-based WFI Guide (as shared in response #2). ISPE D/A/CH is not only actively shaping industry standards, but we are also leading in recognizing industrial excellence within robotics with our RAYA program. RAYA is a yearly recognition of best in the industry applications for robotics.

All those initiatives show how the D/A/CH region has served as a true incubator for internationally relevant industry thinking. Beyond technical excellence, our Emerging Leaders community has built a strong and highly engaged network beyond the D/A/CH region. They pioneered the ISPE International Emerging Leaders Hackathon, a benchmark with ISPE globally, and the Future Leaders Days, which became a must-attend event for European Emerging Leaders, including students and recent graduates.

Taken together, these examples show that many of our initiatives have had impact far beyond the region. They have helped shape industry standards, build capability, and create platforms that continue to influence pharmaceutical manufacturing worldwide.

Looking ahead, what are your top priorities or ambitions for the Affiliate, and how do you see your contributions to your local community or the industry evolving?

Looking ahead, our top priority is to keep ISPE D/A/CH technically relevant, highly connected, and closely aligned with the needs of the pharmaceutical industry and our members. We want to continue strengthening the exchange between regulators, industry experts, and decision-makers, while also expanding the practical value we offer through our communities, events, and working groups.

A second ambition is to further build the next generation of leaders and volunteers. The future of the Affiliate depends on creating strong pathways for Emerging Leaders, including students and recent graduates, and experienced members to contribute side by side. That balance ensures continuity of expertise while keeping the organization open to new ideas, new technologies, and new ways of working.

We also see a growing role in helping the industry translate major trends into implementation. Topics such as digitalization, sustainability, advanced manufacturing, and operational excellence will remain central, and we want ISPE D/A/CH to be a place where these themes are not only discussed but turned into practical guidance and peer learning. In that sense, our contribution will continue to evolve from knowledge exchange toward active ecosystem building across the D/A/CH region.

As the pharmaceutical landscape continues to evolve, the ISPE D/A/CH Affiliate remains committed to driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and supporting the next generation of industry leaders. Through its strong technical communities, forward-looking initiatives, and dedication to practical implementation, the Affiliate not only responds to change, but plays an active role in introducing new ideas that enable innovation. Its continued focus on connecting expertise, advancing knowledge, and building a resilient professional network strengthens its regional footprint while advancing global industry initiatives.
