Jack was instrumental in the early development of sterile barrier isolator technology and played a leading role in shaping how the pharmaceutical industry approaches contamination control. His work on isolators and restricted access barrier systems (RABS)—including his landmark industry survey and contributions to ISPE guidance that was referenced by the US Food and Drug Administration as recently as this year—left a lasting imprint on both industry practice and regulatory thinking.
But his influence extended far beyond technical contributions. More than 33 years ago, Jack was a driving force in establishing what ISPE now calls the ISPE Aseptic Conference. He did not just participate in the conversation. He helped build the platform where that conversation continues to evolve today.
A Belief in People
What set Jack apart was not only what he knew, but how he worked. He believed in advancing people. He believed in sharing knowledge freely, challenging assumptions openly, and holding the industry to a higher standard—not through authority, but through example.
He was the kind of professional who made time for the next generation. Who understood that the longevity of an industry depends not just on innovation, but on the deliberate transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next.

Why This Grant Carries His Name
The Jack Lysfjord Grant was created to invest directly in emerging pharmaceutical professionals—students and early career engineers who represent the future of aseptic manufacturing.
Naming this grant in his honor is not symbolic. It is a continuation of how Jack worked and what he valued. Every year, as new recipients are selected and given access to the conference, mentorship, and community, his approach to the industry lives on—not in theory, but in people.
That is the legacy we are building on. And it is one worth protecting.
This post is Part 1 of the Jack Lysfjord Grant blog post series. Over the coming weeks, readers will be introduced to the nine 2026 recipients of the Jack Lysfjord Grant and gain insight into how the industry collaborated to fund this initiative.
