The Facility of the Year Awards (FOYA) Category Winners announcement was once again a cornerstone moment of the 2026 ISPE Europe Annual Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, offering attendees an inside look at the facilities that were shaping the future of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing. The session brought together industry leaders, engineers, and innovators to recognize projects that exemplified technical excellence, social impact, and bold thinking—benchmarking what “best in class” looked like in a rapidly evolving industry.

Francesco Intoccia with GSK, a long standing FOYA judge, emphasized that the FOYA Category Winners Announcement session played a critical role in the conference experience. He reflected that the session showcased facilities that were truly leading the industry forward. These projects, he noted, applied innovative engineering solutions and advanced technologies to push boundaries—not only in how facilities were designed and built, but in how they supported superior working environments and patient outcomes.

Taken together, the FOYA Category Winners demonstrated the progress the pharmaceutical industry continued to make in delivering healthcare at scale, with speed, quality, and responsibility.

FOYA and the Conference’s Core Focus Areas

Intoccia explained that the FOYA program had long been closely aligned with the overarching goals of the ISPE Europe Annual Conference. The program, he said, set rigorous standards across innovation, operational effectiveness, engineering excellence, automation, and social impact—core focus areas that were woven throughout the conference’s technical sessions and discussions.

The FOYA Category Winners highlighted facilities that not only met these demanding criteria, but also demonstrated exceptional ingenuity in addressing real world challenges. According to Intoccia, the broader conference then provided fertile ground for attendees to explore these solutions in greater depth, learn from peer experiences, and consider how similar approaches could be adapted within their own organizations.

In this way, FOYA served both as recognition and as a catalyst—spotlighting what was possible and encouraging knowledge transfer across the global pharmaceutical ecosystem.

What Set the 2026 FOYA Category Winners Apart

Drawing on his many years of experience as a FOYA judge, Intoccia shared that the quality of submissions in 2026 once again set a remarkably high bar. Each year, he noted, the judging panel was impressed by the increasing sophistication, ambition, and execution discipline evident in the nominated projects.

When selecting FOYA Category Winners, the judges looked for projects that were genuinely first of a kind—projects that introduced new methods, technologies, or models rather than incremental improvements. The winners, he said, were notable because they established new benchmarks for the industry to follow. Their influence extended beyond their own organizations, raising expectations for what future pharmaceutical facilities could and should achieve.

Emerging Themes: Digitalization, AI, and Breakthrough Therapies

Intoccia observed that two themes clearly emerged among the 2026 FOYA Category Winners. The first was the growing maturity and impact of digital technology and artificial intelligence in pharmaceutical manufacturing. From advanced automation systems to integrated data environments, these projects demonstrated how digital tools were being embedded into facility design and operations to improve efficiency, quality, and decision making.

The second dominant theme was the role of facilities in enabling new medicines and therapies. Several winning projects focused on supporting advanced modalities—such as cell and gene therapies or complex biologics—requiring new approaches to manufacturing flexibility, contamination control, and rapid scale up. These facilities, Intoccia noted, were not just operational achievements; they were enablers of medical innovation with tangible benefits for patients.

Advancing Innovation, Excellence, and Collaboration

According to Intoccia, advancing innovation, excellence, and collaboration was at the very heart of the FOYA program. Each category winning project illustrated a new way of achieving excellence—whether by introducing novel processes, accelerating project delivery, reducing environmental impact, or creating more sustainable and human centric workplaces.

What stood out most, he said, was that each Category Winner represented a level of unprecedented excellence. These projects required close collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and external partners—underscoring how collective expertise enabled truly breakthrough results.

Recognizing the 2026 FOYA Category Winners

At the 2026 ISPE Europe Annual Conference, ISPE announced eight Category Winners and two Honorable Mentions, spanning multiple continents and therapeutic areas. The awards recognized excellence across innovation, operations, supply chain, Pharma 4.0™, and social impact. Together, the winning projects reflected meaningful advances in modular design, digital manufacturing, accelerated execution, and integrated quality strategies—all while maintaining a strong focus on patient centric outcomes.

Join the Celebration at the 2026 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo

While the FOYA Category Winners were announced in Copenhagen, the celebration does not end there. The 2026 FOYA Category Winners will be formally recognized, and the overall FOYA winner will be announced, at the FOYA Banquet and Awards Celebration, taking place Sunday, 18 October, during the 2026 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo in Washington, D.C., United States.

This event is a unique opportunity to celebrate engineering excellence, connect with peers from across the global pharmaceutical community, and gain deeper insights into the projects setting new standards for the industry.
