Takeda
Location: Vienna, Austria
Project: AHEAD (Advanced Heat Pump Demonstrator)

Project AHEAD (Advanced Heat Pump Demonstrator) is a flagship sustainability and innovation project at Takeda’s Vienna manufacturing site, demonstrating that even the most energy-intensive pharmaceutical processes can be decarbonized at industrial scale without compromising safety, quality, or reliability. Completed in September 2025, AHEAD is a cornerstone of Takeda’s long-term environmental strategy and a tangible step toward achieving net-zero operations by 2035 and netzero across the value chain by 2040.
At the heart of the project is a world-first industrial heat pump system capable of producing high-pressure steam (11 bar, >200°C) using 100 percent renewable electricity and natural refrigerants. Installed at Takeda’s largest global manufacturing site, the system replaces conventional fossil-fuel boilers and delivers up to 80 percent CO₂ emissions reduction, equivalent to approximately 1,600 tons of CO₂ saved annually. This breakthrough addresses one of the most challenging decarbonization barriers in pharmaceutical manufacturing, where high-temperature steam is essential for GMP-compliant production.
Project AHEAD goes beyond technical achievement. By intelligently recovering waste heat from existing refrigeration systems, the solution produces CO₂-free steam for more than seven months each year, operating as a fully functional utility-scale system rather than a pilot. Advanced modeling, simulation, and real-time monitoring were developed in line with Pharma 4.0™ principles to ensure optimized performance, high reliability, and scalability across other sites and industries.
The project exemplifies operational excellence and rigorous safety management. A dedicated building was constructed without disrupting ongoing pharmaceutical production, while stringent safety and regulatory requirements, particularly related to the use of flammable natural refrigerants, were successfully addressed through advanced engineering, simulation, and governance. Continuous patient supply and workforce safety remained uncompromised throughout the project lifecycle.
Project AHEAD is also a model of collaboration and social impact. Developed with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and SPH Sustainable Process Heat, and supported by Austria’s Climate and Energy Fund, the project embraces radical openness: Takeda deliberately chose not to patent the technology, enabling transparent knowledge sharing and accelerating adoption across industries. This approach has attracted global attention, with AHEAD being presented at COP28, showcased at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, and recognized with the Net Zero Industries Award.
Project AHEAD is more than an engineering milestone, it is a blueprint for industrial decarbonization, proving that sustainability, innovation, and operational performance can reinforce one another. By combining breakthrough technology, data-driven execution, and a commitment to openness, it sets a new benchmark for sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing and delivers lasting value for patients, society, and the planet. Takeda is recognized as the 2026 ISPE FOYA Category Winner for Social Impact – Sustainability Efforts.
